Default Lost Dragstrips

I was there back then and wish it was still there.

Yes,what memory's. Our track that closed had a rich history Kansas City International Raceway. It was closed by new home owners that did not care about the lives it changed.

Also, I think US 30 Dragway opened in the mid 1950's (not sure exact date) but was shut down in 1984,,,

I won my first Drag Racing Trophy at Hanford Calif.'s 'Marchbanks-Speedway' they ran the 1/4 mile race backwards on the front straight. Note: Marchbanks was NASCAR's biggest and highest-banked track at the time. Also Indy Cars ran there (Mario Andretti won there once and I saw the STP Turbine car there...) All gone now...!!!

Bet not many know about Marchbanks! It sure is completely gone now and even with the exact location i wasn't able to tell there used to be a track that was like Daytona or Charlotte in it's day.

Probably the wrong location for it.

I will never forget York US 30 drag strip. If it weren't for some rain outs at big events and regulations by the government of the airport's use they would still be racing at this facility.

i know up till a few years ago the track was still there with trees growing out of it. not sure if its still there or not. the track in New Bethlehem PA ( known as Newbee ) just north of Kittanning is there also with trees growing out of it also, it closed in early 80s. I heard 2 brothers wanted to open Newbee back up but they were worried about the neighbors bitching, but that was a few years ago

I have a pretty good amount of info n pics of Marchbanks (right across the street from Bernie Brazil's Family Farm)..., it was first an Oval, then remade into a large Triangle configuration.
(I can't seem to post a Photo here...)

Drag City, a.k.a. Meander, @ the old Youngstown Municipal Airport. Ran by Alex the Greek for decades. Then he sold it to Joe Richter who had hit the PA Lottery. Asshole ran it for the rest of the year the way Alex had and the place was packed to the gills. The next spring he opened with a big crowd but different rules. No bike class, which always had a good turnout, and BOX/NOBOX. After the third weekend he shut it down because no one wanted to play by his rules. How fuckin stupid can a person be. Buy a gold mine and turn it into a barren coal shaft. That end came in spring of 2000.

originally Eldora, later Fairmont Dragway, outside Fairmont, W.Va.,
opened in 1964 (I believe), closing after 1999:
I raced & worked there in the early 1990's

viewed from near the rear of the lanes, tower is ahead, with track to the Right

better view of tower

about 1/2 way out onto the track (you backed-up for the burnout), here is the Starter's area

view from Right-hand lane, looking down-track ~ shut-down went up-hill and to the Right, with return road visible in distance at-Right

opposite view, looking back at tower from that elevated cut

view from tower, mid 1990's

compare with 1st photo I shared - tower is long-gone

me, many years ago at that track

^^^ i remember people talking about that place when it was open, i never made it down there to race. from your pics the track and grounds look like they help up pretty good since 1999. any idea why the place closed up. by the way did you use to race that car at keystone in early 90s

Lancaster Speedway have a very long history of a little 1/8 mile track that could. The track is one of those people currently hate and I do think it is no small part the track management's fault.I do think if it should ever close,it would be greatly missed.Kind of sad that the cars growth in how fast they have become wasn't matched with improvements by the track which is land locked.
