NHRA did not want to piss off Chevrolet so they created the Limited Production (L/P) class on the fly, so the cars would be able to run, hoping that Chevy would increase production before the Nationals on Labor Day Weekend, at which time they would be legal SS/S cars. Remember, in the early 1960's NHRA had only two events per year, the Winternats and the Nationals. Anyway, Chevy did not build more Z-11's, they knew that the GM racing ban was in the works. Pontiac was in a different boat and did not raise a stink about the Swiss Cheese cars being illegal for SS/S completion, they already had the 421 Tempest Lemans which was legal for F/X (they had built only about a dozen of the Tempests).

Interesting times...
Plus Pontiac killed off their racing program during the 1963 production run.

That is correct, as did Chevrolet. Dick Brannon's '63 lightweight Ford also had to run in the L/P class at the Winternats.

The car doesn't need all that tire for sure. I've been telling him for years to tune the suspension and put a smaller width tire on it and go faster.

Fat tires might not be S/S acceptable but they sure do look cool.

Perhaps if your organization did not alienate all cars that were not MoPars or did not have a big block you would have a good turnout.

The events I attend have no problem filling the pits.
It is very rare that we do not meet our minimum car count. As I have said, we don't want sb Novas and such because that is something some one can see at any drag strip on any given day. We would rather have quality over quantity. Not that I don't like the cars. An L-79 Chevy II would be awesome to have personally. Just not in the club. We put on a show with cars you DON'T see all the time especially in one gathering. Track owners must agree as we have had as many as 18 paid events in one season attending a multitude of tracks in several states.

That is a bad ass group of cars though. Awesome!

Plenty of them still around it seems.
The HAMB drags does this exact thing.

Cars have to be earlier than '65 and be period correct. You have to submit a pic of your car for them to allow you to race. No current wheels, etc.

It isn't limited to Superstock, though.

Meltdown Drags are the same also.

Sounds like some of you guys are looking for a nostalgia P/S class. Too bad most are so far away. Myself & a local NHRA guy are working on something that may appeal to some of you.

Couple of pics of my Cuda below.

I typically run in the SHRA NSS series. I may make it up to a couple of the Victory, or NMCA races this year, but only if it doesn't conflict with any of the SHRA points races.

The SHRA schedule puts us running in Texas and Oklahoma, which is perfect for me since I live southwest of Houston. Everything is a long drive for me...

yes its a great looking car but it is not a NSS car IMO the hood and tires looks mor like a modern super pro car andit is the reason NSS groups that are paid to put on a more period correct show keep them out also why i like the meltdown drags because the wheels and everything have to be correct as they should have to IMO fyi here is a pic of mine!

I can think of at least one more mid-size Ford that would run some of those events if they allowed Cobra Jet era entries (1968-69).

I can understand the intent to keep the small cars (Nova, Camaro, Mustang) off the dance card since these are indeed what "everybody" races every weekend, and they would dilute the show aspects.

Yes, the scoop does not fit the era and actually looks out of place.

The rear tires should be given a free pass. Way too many of those cars got tubbed for a fatter tire. Not allowing a car just because of its rear tire size is as asinine as not allowing a small block.

It also eliminates a lot of competitors at an event that would have normally signed up for the class.

You can't leave these cars at the door step and call it a "Super Stock Class". Go back and read the S/S rules of the period.
