Care to explain what is "nostalgic" about a "hi rise sheet metal intake"?

Great posts George. I was too young to enjoy those days in the 60s when factory cars raced against each other like you outlined, and there were enough to fill each class at each track. From what I understand, that's pretty much why there were so many classes, and the number (of classes and cars racing) grew each year.

That being said, and generally understood,...there's no way today's events, tracks, classes,. etc,...with the relatively small number of vintage racers and cars out there, could mimic or reflect yesteryear's racing. So, the watered down rules, lack of period correct equipment restrictions, and many allowances, etc,...and the wide range of different "nostalgic" cars that compete against each other, is really inevitable.

I like this ladder and put the closes ones together
Nostalgia Super Stock – All Run Field:

Nostalgia Super Stock is an index-style foot brake only eliminator for the year models, body styles, and

engine combinations which accurately represent those American-built cars that raced in the Factory

Experimental and Super Stock classes of the early and mid-1960s. Combination of rules used by NSSNA

AND NMCA. Contact Doug Duell at 812-473-0215 or go to evansvillechrysler.com to view NSS rules.

Safety inspection by NHRA E.T. Rules. Eleven classes on handicap full tree. Random initial pairings.

Laddered pairings and payout starts when field is reduced to 8 cars.

AAA/F/X - 8.75 AA/F/X - 9.00 A/FX - 9.25 B/FX - 9.50 C/FX - 9.75

A/NSS - 10.00 B/NSS - 10.50 C/NSS - 11.00 D/NSS - 11.50 E/NSS - 12.00 F/NSS - 12.50

You are correct, it is the only way to run these classes today. The problem for the promoting organizations (NHRA in this case) was that all the classes in the early 1960's were heads-up classes. This meant that if you had 20 stock classes, ranging from S/S down to L/S (or whatever), you had to award 20 winners and 20 runner-ups. Dial-in racing fixed that problem entirely, you could run 80 cars together and award 1 winner and 1 runner-up.

I happen to like bracket racing, it serves a purpose. But don't ever let anyone tell you that is "nostalgia racing" because it's not. It's dial-in racing with vintage cars or "new" cars dressed up to look like vintage cars...

A lot of the NENDRA cars are period correct but some deviate with different hood scoops and wider tires. Most or if not all the NENDRA cars have correct interiors.
Most of our racers are ET chasers who every year try to get a personal best.
This is why index racing won't work for us.
Slowing down a car just doesn't work for NENDRA but I understand the concept. It' just not for us.

I feel your pain, but the problem is that you were born too late.

Heads-up racing today in a nostalgia S/S class would only work if all the cars in the class were from the same year, and abided by the NHRA S/S rules for that particular year. For instance, let's say you had a 1962 413 Dodge or Plymouth S/S. You would need to be in a class with other 1962 413 Dodges or Plymouths, along with 1962 Chevy 409's, 1962 Ford 406's and 1962 Pontiac 421's.

The chances of that happening today are about the same as winning the lottery, which is about 23-million to 1. This is why we have what we have, a dial-in or index class that is mixed with a variety of vintage cars, with mixed years, half of which were never classified as a S/S car in the first place and 50% of those that are left do not have a "period correct" S/S car anyway. This is not to say that they are not nice cars and fun to watch or look at, but a 1961 Ford Galaxie with a 460" BB Ford engine is just that, along with 1964 Chevy Malibu powered by a 500" BB Chevy engine...

The closest thing to a real NSS race that I have raced was way back in the late 90's and early 2000's at Atco raceway.
We had NSS/A, NSS/B all the way down to NSS/F to keep the cars with similar ET's to race together.
Was more close racing than now.
Unfortunately, we are lucky to get 15-16 NSS cars at the same venue at a time.
There are a few specialty races such as Dover Reunion and Beaver Springs Nationals when we can get a few hundred similar cars on the same property, but after those few races these correct legal NSS cars vanish till the following year.
They pop up once or twice a year at most.

Mirrors under a SS car? Perfect example of someone over-restoring a car to today’s standards. These cars back in the day weren’t show cars, they were race cars. Don’t get me wrong- it’s beautiful but holy crap, over-restored.
