It's nothing crazy, just like everything else back then, they were made to last.

It's a no 3 morse taper. The only thing I've ever had in it was a 5/8" jacobs chuck.

+2.

The biggest lack on most home sized drill presses is a slow enough spindle speed. Most are made for woodwacking and will burn up your drills in steel. If you want to drill a 1/2" hole in steel you need about 350 RPM or less, 500 will just chatter and smoke. I can work around a lack of ridigidity, loose bearings, crappy feed mechanism, slipping belts, etc if I have to when in someone else's shop, but if the spindle is too fast I give up fast. If you can turn the spindle slower than you need you can compensate somehow for the rest.

I have a small 1970s wilton I move around the shop for deburring and tapping and other seconds ops with a hand truck, we built a speed reducer out of the step pulleys that came on it plus a new 2.5" pulley on the motor and it's been in constant commercial use for 40+ years and still going strong.

Make sure the table is geared to crank up and down. If not, it's probably a press that should have been avoided anyway.
