Default 53 million vehicle recalled in 2016

927 recalls, compared to 304 recalls of just under 18 million vehicles in 1996.

Hard to believe cars are getting better.

a lot of things that are small issues on cars these days become recalls-that would never have been a recall 15 years ago,car manufacturers do not want the liability of something overlooked anymore

A Lot of fancy electronics that newer cars get. It took me a week to get used to all the stuff on my new Impala. Thank goodness my kids were home!

I'm in the driver controls business. There are many more devices that are considered safety items now, compared to vehicles in the past. It's only going to get worse.

Items that are conceived out of convenience become safety items after a short time.

An example off the top.of my head: the motorized sliding door on a minivan. Simple convenience, right? Not so fast. Now that a motor is needed to close it, you need to sense the resistance on the motor to reverse direction in the event that someone is kn the door. There are a few items in that mechanism that could cause the sensing to fail. Recall

What of it doesn't latch fully in its own? Simple, right? Nah, now you need to sense that it's fully latched and not only is the latch a safety item, but so is the "door ajar" sensor.

That's stuff that is right off the top of my head as an illustration. It's not the gospel truth about door latches, it's just conjecture based.on my knowledge of driver controls.

This culture of added convenience will cripple us at sometime, for multiple reasons.

automakers also don't want to pay top dollar for quality parts so they squeeze the suppliers. Suppliers supply parts according to what manufacturers are willing to pay for. Manufacturers(plant managers, bean counters, many engineers) just want the product out the door, and are willing to take a chance that nothing will happen(performance bonuses and promotions are on the line, that's what warranties are for mentallity). CEO's are mushrooms, fed bullshit and kept in the dark and don't know what is actually happening on the shop floors

Can you imagine what the number would be if they were forced to fix all of the shitty designed issues? Look at all of the years that Ford sent cars out with BS torque converters, yet no recalls...Just a big expense for owners.

imagine being a dealer, you get a million chances to make a sale on those recalled vehicles and you don’t have to advertise.

Yup, my brother had a recall on his Camaro. They sent him a new key, problem solved.

Ford Motor must have had 52 million themselves. I think they have recalled more cars then they built.

Can you imagine if GM was forced to recall all their brake and fuel line problems.

CEO's and top brass don't want to know what's happening on the shop floor. Much easier to feign shock and outrage that way.

Just might mean they are on top of things, finding the problems, and making sure they get fixed.
