Default TH400/4L80E Forward Clutch Return Springs

Are there any limitations in using the caged return spring assembly from a 4L80E with a TH400 clutch piston? Meaning, it'll pass for a stock build but not recommended for a performance build. I suspect it would be ok to use in any application, but just wanted to verify. Also, I believe the springs are shorter with the caged assembly?

I'm using Coan billet pistons for both the Forward and Direct assemblies, but on the Forward I'm unable to find stock OEM springs. The only option I found was posted here: https://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/s...15&postcount=7 (bottom of page).

When installing a 4L80E forward clutch piston in a TH400 forward clutch housing you must install the production 4L80E forward or direct clutch return spring assembly. This is a one piece design. It consists of 16 springs installed between 2 stamped steel retainers. The springs are crimped to the upper retainer and are slip fit over locating tabs on the lower retainer. See Figure. To use this assembly in a TH400 forward drum, gently remove and discard the lower retainer from the assembly.
Pics below...first two images show the inner lip seal missing, however I did install it before final assembly.

Should be fine with the stock springs they have attached to them.

I use aftermarket reverse piston springs from a powerglide... however they are slightly stronger than stock springs... I tend to use them only in fixed line pressure applications but they work well. https://www.sonnax.com/parts/1913-he...-return-spring

My pump is setup for ~190 psi fixed. Assuming these would work, I'll purchase a set.

Thanks!

The initial question was fwd clutch. My reply was for the specific clutch only. The 4l80 retainer is a flimsy piece of shit and should not be used with anything except the stock springs.

Got it; so on the Forward clutch I can either use the stock 4L80E unit (retainer and springs), or use the Sonnax springs recommended by Detroit Gearbox with a standard TH400 retainer.
