Default 2 races 2 coil packs

i went to 2nd race in 4 weeks and lost another coil pack, lost one at first race and one in 2nd race, coil packs are to holley dominator system and are just a little over a year old. I have them mounted on my valve covers, does anyone know if this could cause any problems from vibration not grounding properly. I have been replacing them with factory gm coils to get by and seems to run ok. any thoughts, thanks

Does the harness just plug into a gm ls coil What needs to be done to swap from a Holley coil to a replacement

I thought the Holleys looked very similar to the coils on a grand national.

The coil itself is going bad but the module is still fine?

I never tried to take one apart myself. I have them in my car, but they are not mounted like yours, I put them inside the cowl.

Are they dying on you and you have no spark? How hot do they get mounted on the valve covers?

I made over 200 passes last year on mine, no issues at all with them.

The coil quits sparking, the motor never gets hot, starting line is 100 degrees and finish line is 150 degrees , pull to line and pull back. Module seems fine , put on different coil and keep going

Did you send either of the dead coils back to Holley to get checked?

I had some weak coils a few years ago but Holley swapped them for tested new coils. Car ran but the fumes at idle were god-awful nasty! Burned my eyes. Put new coil packs in and everything was fine after that. Holley started testing their coil packs after this, I wasn't the only one, but Holley took care of everything.

I'm curious if they were open or shorted. Not that it really matters, bad is bad! Are these coils the old GN stuff? I bet these are the same coils that my little S-10 has.

Resistance on primary side was high and yes the coils on2.5 in your s-10 would be the same

Do you have a ground jumper for the covers?

The base of the coil pack is the ground return. You have an alum cover sitting on an insulating gasket grounded only by the bolts. Not optimal sometimes. Have a bad ground and the current finds other paths, bad paths that torch coils.

The DIS coil pack harness already has each coil grounded; jumped from each coil to engine ground/cylinder head.
http://www.holley.com/data/Products/.../199R10525.pdf (See wiring diagram - figure 3, page 6.)

The circuitry that drives the Holley waste-fire coils is potted in the base of each coil.
I'm not sure if these base modules can ruin the coils themselves. Just something else to consider.

What is your dwell time set to? Too much dwell can overheat the coil and cause failure.

Call technical service ask for Travis or Tom and tell them the situation. they will test the coils, and replace if they are faulty due to a manufacturing defect. I would do it myself but I'm off 4-6 weeks. Had a shoulder surgery yesterday. - Derek

The high current power to the coils are go though "spade" type connections between the coils and the base. On some early coils, the "tightness" of this connection may not have been tight enough. When you insert the coil into the base, check to see how much tension is on this connection. This was checked and corrected a while back.

They appear to be either the coils that Electromotive developed for GM in the '80s and also used on their own ignition systems, or somebody's knock off of that design. A lot of coil manufacturers copied that style to have something for the GM guys to run.
