I've heard of Big Oak Lake Dragway (near Columbia, right?) but couldn't dig up any info on it. I'd love to see some old pictures from there, and video would be even cooler!

The list on Amazon has Brainerd Optimist and Paradise, they are still operating from what I remember. I know Brainerd relocated once.
There used to be a strip in the east Kingsport,TN area, anything on it? I'd say it would take a lifetime and volumes to list all of the shut down tracks in the country. Really sad when you think about it. Back when people had little money but had time and did things there were tracks everywhere.

curious if Aquasco Speedway is in it-Aquasco, Md
was a big stop for Grumpy Jenkins, Strikler, Jungle Jim, a lot of the early funnies, factory backed cars, jet cars (green monster)
track is still there, just over grown
we used to hit it every weekend, make a wrong turn and an armed guard would run you off (Nike site, lol)

Yeah, Brainerd and Paradise are still operating, but they are featured in a special chapter on the "Chattanooga Hotspot" where more than a dozen drag strips operated within a 100 mile radius. I did a small feature on each track in the area, and explained the history of the track, and its condition in the modern era.

And yes, you're right it would take a lifetime to make a book that included all of the abandoned tracks. Guys like Bret Kepner and others have spent MANY years collecting information and photos from thousands of tracks. Unfortunately, my book deadline was 9 months, so I obviously couldn't put forth that kind of long term effort. I imagine there will be a sequel to this book, much like CarTech has done with the "Lost Hot Rods" series.

Unfortunately, that's another that didn't make the cut. There were so many great tracks in the Northeast, and only a certain number of pages.

Well it's February 15th, and the book has been officially released. Due to all of the pre-orders on Amazon, it is out of stock until they get another shipment in from the publisher. Should be in stock within the next few days. Thanks for all the pre-orders!

I'm the other main track researcher with Bret. I look forward to seeing your book even though we should have already done one years ago. There are a bunch of new tracks that have opened, many more recently closed and a bunch of old tracks newly discovered just in the past few months alone. I'm sure there's no way to account for every last one. Some really aren't much to write about and pictures of an old runway start to all look the same after a while.

I find the ones with visible ruins fascinating, Motor City in Michigan, Windsor, Ontario, Niagara New York, Fresno California and one near Baker Florida were my favorites to visit.

I've located many of the US tracks on our list also almost all of the thousand plus ones in other countries. Most are active, not too many ghost tracks outside the US but there are many that have been running for 40 years or more.
