: Something Different... 416ci LS3 powered Exocet toy car (1600 lbs)

So I've been wanting to build something nutty for a bit, and settled on an exocet from exomotive. Basically it's a tube chassis that uses miata subframes and suspension, that is about 80-90% the physical footprint of a miata (read: TINY).

All the miata V8 stuff basically more or less bolts on and it all fits (more space in the tube chassis). Originally I was going to do a supercharged LSA miata, but this won't cost much more with a N/A LS3 and the stupid/fun factor is going to be way higher.

Plans currently are a basic 416ci LS3/T56 with ported stock heads and a medium/big cam - should make 550rwhp or so, 500 ft/lbs. Nothing fancy, but nothing fancy is needed. The final weight of this thing is going to be roughly 1600 pounds, obviously an absurd power to weight ratio for a toy car.

Settled on a color called "Transparent Copper" for the chassis powdercoat - it looks very similar to GM's sunset orange metallic in person, with Midnight Blue/Black bodywork (looks black with a slight blue hint in bright sun).

Any way, the lead time is about 22 weeks right now, so I'm not going to have too much interesting to post in the meantime, excepting perhaps me getting the powerplant put together/ready to drop in. Going to be a fun project

It's going to be a road course toy. Huge wing f/r. Will be useless on the street, but a hoot to fool around in.

Wing like this, with a front one as well

Thousand pounds of downforce at 100mph and you can't have too much horsepower. Most guys have been building then with the lame miata 4cyl, or with a turbo on that shit engine. I actually want to go fast

Needs to roll:

Find a donor car in KS (Frt hubs, brakes, harness, steer column, rack)
Order V8roadsters ls3 subframe and t56 batwing mount
Order Getrag mount/axles/driveshaft to mate to T56 in exocet
Source good 01-02 F body T56
Figure out a light clutch to use
Coilover kit, have to figure out useful spring rate
Finish 416ci LS3
Order hot rod harness/ecu/pedal from GMPP
Order wheels and tires(15x8, 15x10) Thinking 245/40/15 and 275/35/15 Hoosier A7s for fun and 245/50/15 Toyo R888s all around for street driving. Maybe some ET pros for hurting feelings on occasion? Width is pretty much unlimited since there are no fenders or body to interfere with, only concern is keeping enough heat in the tires.

Longer term/ finish items for road race, downforce isn't going to be an option with this much power.

Source a Nascar COT wing for the lower front
Source a second COT wing for the rear, or an APR GTC200 wing.

Ended up having to go stock stroke due to clearance issues with steering rack (its tight!)

Here's where it sits right now, chassis due later this month. Got to do the bushings, clean+paint the pieces, and a few minor touches. Ordered a shit ton of parts today to get it ready. Just moved into a new house with a secondary garage that's insulated/air conditioned and heated, so it will be a great build space.

Please don't take this wrong, but you appear to be outside of the roll cage when you are sitting in the seat. You should look into this for your safety. Car should be an absolute blast. I had a modified that was only about 400hp @ 2500lbs, This this should be a rocket.

Dietcoke
10-01-2015, 11:52 PM
Not even close. The sides aren't straight, they're VERY curved. You're limited by space somewhat, however, to move the seat. It's as far inward as possible. This is a SMALL car. The outer wing of the seat will be bent inward when final fitment is accomplished for more containment.

What rear diff/gears are you running?
Planning on traction control?
Did you get a final weight wet with fuel/fluids and no driver?

I have yet to see one make an impressive 1/4 mile pass. Since you are on YB you gotta make a few passes!

If you ever make it out to the West Coast to do some road racing please contact me.

3.42/LSD gm 7.5" out of a cadillac sts gu5.
No traction control.
No weight yet. Expecting ~1600 given the sum of all components.

I'll take it down the 1/4 for sure, need some big ass tires though. Maybe a 28x11.5 on a 15x10. Season's over here in the midwest but I'm taking it to tx2k16 in march so I'm sure I can run it then

what does the oiling system comprise of?

Is there a reason why you wouldn't run a 275mm square setup for track duty?

Would have a hard time keeping heat in 275s. There isnt enough weight here, and without a fender to incubate the rubber, they stay very cool. It might be doable on a very high speed road course in summertime, but other then that...

Bone ass stock oil system, with a very creative pan baffle and overfilled a qt. No, it's not ideal. It's cheap though.

Drove the shit out of the car today. Lessons learned: Need more tire (fixed). Need more seat time... Power+Turn=Grass

Thing is shitballs fast and fun as fuck.

Ordered some 275/35 hoosiers to replace the 205/50 street comp tires for fun events. That should fix it.

Was third fastest of the day out of the field, behind a nationals winning car and a very very fast M3 driven by another nationals class winner. Not too bad for a first time out.

Have you actually put the car on the scales? Sure looks like it would come in at more than 1600lbs. The old sprint car (iron sbc+Shorty powerglide) I have weighs over 1700lbs and you have a lot more tubing and suspension weight. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/lllosingit/My%20car.jpg

Getting it corner balanced next week so will have a good exact accurate # on that. Others have put the same combo on scales. 1600 lbs. They're ~1450 with the miata 4cyl.

Not sure about suspension weight, but the control arms are less then 6 or 7# a corner and the shocks are pretty light. Miata parts arent heavy.

Nowhere is open yet here in the midwest, the first AutoX event of the year is this weekend. First road course weekend is May 7-8 at Mid America Motorplex. My only gripe with the car currently is the cross bar in the halo hoop. I'm going to cut it out and have a bar run down the center instead, to improve helmet clearance (im tall). This year is just going to be a lot of proving of the car, going overseas this fall (army) and will get to building a real motor for the car. Probably big bore medium stroke (4.125 x 3.75 stroke) due to oil pan/rack stroke limitations. Something I can get 550whp out of at least

So this happened. Car needs drag tires baaaaaaaaaaaaaad. Managed this on a 205/50 street tire, lol. Ice skating down the track, almost tagged the wall a couple times. Solid mid or low 10 I think with a 1.4-1.5 60 and no spinning/skating on shifts

Bad ass ride man! Track day super car destroyer for sure.

Kinda like a "U-Build-It" version if the Ariel Atom V-8.

Next up is a nice set of CNC'd heads from AI. Another 50 horse should push it to the mid 130s on a tire. Will try to get my hands on a set and head back. All in good fun

Car is bonkers with the new heads. Some of these on their way here, and will give it another go at the 1/4.

Give the 1/4 another go saturday. Got the tires sorted. Supposedly these new bias R's work pretty well

can get a bit squirmy with bias ply and radial mixed... unless running bias ply on front as well

Dietcoke
04-20-2016, 08:26 PM
Nope, regular street radials. I've run mixed before. It's not ideal, but it will work. This thing handles better then... well, ALL drag cars.

Dietcoke
04-20-2016, 08:37 PM
I thought about putting drag radials on it, but the bias tire I figured will help traction much more, since I have no give anywhere and very low travel stiff rear suspension. The sidewall flex shouldhelp me immensely (and maybe prolong the life of the chunk), plus it being a 6 speed.

Doesn't look as silly as I thought it might.

First pass, first broken part on the car. Sheared clean on the 1-2 shift. DSS axle. Weak.

That sucks man. I've done that several times, but not since switchng to a slushbox auto. I still carry a replacement with me every time I go to the track.

Wow...

What application are those axles for? Wouldn't think a light little car like that would even need dss axles

Those are dss axles, made for the swap in a miata. :smt088 Nothing off the shelf fits miata geometry&hubs/cadillac rearend.

Dietcoke

I didn't even pick up the slip. I'd assume a 1.5 or thereabouts, it left HARD.

I did get it back together in time to make the divisional, where I won the class.

Also got fenders on it today, car's first real time at the road course sat and sun this weekend.

Blew the JY motor up back in late may at 160 on the roadcourse frontstretch, got a new one in it. Will post some updates on that whole debacle. Hopefully it will be back drivable tomorrow.
