: 125" LS1 Altered

I have copied and pasted this from another site, but will update here as well from now on.

So here it is...

125" chrome molly Mark Williams chassis 23T
9" sheetmetal diff housing
Strange bolt through carrier
35 spline Strange spool
35 spline Romac axles
Strange carbon brakes and calipers (4 wheel)
Willwood master cylinder
DJ Safety 5pt harness
Stroud parachute
Custom alloy radiator, thermo fan
B&M Pro Bandit shifter with electric solenoid
Spritzer carbon wing and scoop
Sheehan Nose Cone
Fiberglass body

I will be using the motor which I had built for the previous project, but will be making some changes as the motor will be run naturally aspirated for awhile (more details to come later..)

Transmission is a Powerglide built by Protrans, SFI rated casing etc, with a transbrake. Converter is the 4200 built by TCE that I was using in the previous project as well.

I will race this in A/MA trim (Modified) bracket. This is group 3, dial your own racing, so consistency is key. I will be retaining the stock GM ECU - obviously retuned, however this combination should prove to be extremely consistent, reliable and mostly maintenance free.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1350_zps564458a7.jpg

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1351_zpsb5e7816c.jpg

And lastly, have been busy over the last few nights getting an old LS1 block and the powerglide into the chassis for mock up purposes, so I can get the front engine mounts made up to suit.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1366_zps4aeb77b0.jpg

New motor specs, afew things have been changed due to running naturally aspirated:

5.7ltr LS1
Mahle pistons
Eagle rods
Stock crank
238 242 @ 108lsa custom grind cam
Lunati Dual Valve Springs
Morel "Street" Tie Bar Lifters
ARP Head Studs
ARP Main Studs
SLP High Volume Oil Pump
Double Row timing chain
Edelbrock Super Victor Manifold
Edelbrock "Competition" 4-Barrel Throttle Body

Heads will be a set of "241" castings which have been CNC'd - I am waiting until we get the cam in the motor to check PTV clearance, and then heads will be decked accordingly.

Compression with 0.40" decked will be 11.05 : 1

With 0.60" decked will be 12:1

I really hope I can deck 0.60" to get higher compression, and in turn run "E85" (race fuel - really E95) and get better results. Time will tell I guess.

I have done some small things not really picture worthy, mounted the delay box, finished removing unnecessary things from the LS1 loom.

Alot of the parts I had to order have turned up, so I figured this was at least worth a photo, just mocked up:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/mockup_zps96441f46.jpg

Cam has turned up, so this weekend I will be pulling the heads / cam / lifters / pushrod from the engine, installing the new cam and then checking piston to valve (PTV) clearance. From here I will be able to make a decision on how much the heads can be decked. Then once the heads are back, I can measure how long the pushrods need to be.

Also been working on the front motor mounts, just have them sketched on a piece of paper for now, which I will take into the local aluminum fabrication shop who will cut them out via laser for me. Also going to be putting a nice rebate in the back of the plate so it will fit the stock LS1 water pump gaskets in nice and flush. To give you guys an idea of what the plates look like, here is a similar picture borrowed from another forum:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMAG0025_zps61794224.jpg

Front engine plates being made up:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/engineplate_zps9b92dbe9.jpg

Not much else going on, awaiting more parts to turn up - specifically the heads at the moment, so I can check for PTV clearance and then send them off to be milled.

Just done some little small things lately..

1. Design new parachute handle that is abit longer, old one had literally 1cm clearance above my leg. Not my idea of fun at the end of the track, so a longer one was in need! Just a template obviously, new one being CNC'd out of aluminum.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1390_zpsdede1f28.jpg

2. Swapped switches on the dash from the left to right side - all the important ones are now on the right side, which allows me if necessary to cut the fuel & ignition, and hit the parachute with one hand as everything is now on the right hand side. Previously I would have needed to hit the chute, then grab the wheel, then hit the switches with my other hand. Just a little thing that could be handy.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1396_zpsa748e7c6.jpg

3. Mounted, and wired up the delay box and started to make some headway into identifying what wiring I need, what I need to relocate etc. For those who do not know a delay box is, I stole this:

Well, in its purest form it is an electronic control device that delays the release of your trans-brake by a pre-determined amount of time. Your trans-brake button is wired to the delay box and a wire then runs from the delay box to your trans-brake solenoid. When you release your trans-brake button, the delay box counts down the required time and then releases the trans-brake.

The purpose; cut better lights, out-react your opponent and win more rounds.

Some people don't like them as they consider them "cheating" - but at the end of the day, you still have to react to a light, you can red light or have a horrid reaction just like releasing on the bottom bulb.

That wiring box mounts on top of the gearbox. Room to mount things is kind of limited in this sort of "car"

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1398_zps13a3958b.jpg

4. Lastly just some more engine porn. My CNC'd heads turned up today, so some real action should start happening soon!

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/IMG_1392_zps98039ea1.jpg

Have been working on plumbing up the race car this weekend. Did as much as we can until a decision is made on the sump. All SpeedFlow gear of course.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/speedflow1_zps5715786f.jpg

Got the CNC'd front engine plates back, and installed them tonight. Forgot to take a pre-install photo showing the rebate CNC'd at the block side of them for the gasket for water. Will try and remember to get one when I pull it apart for final assembly (still got the mock up engine in it)

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/engineplates_zpsd5a8aa24.jpg

Latest update is I am *STILL* checking engine clearances.

PTV came up really big, like 0.350" of clearance +

This is probably just due to the pistons having 4cc of valve relief in them, but I just want to be really sure before I go and get the heads milled.

This has meant going back to step 1, checking if the cam is degreed correctly, checking pushrod length and then checking PTV clearance again.

Just waiting for a pushrod length checker at the moment.

Adam007

PTV clearance all sorted, bucket loads so once the machine shop opens up the heads are off to have 0.60" shaved.

Engine is at a friends place to be final assembled (he has abit more experience & tools then me)

I had some help from another friend, and the wiring harness is 95% now complete, the LS1 harness is integrated into the harness for the race car. Just afew plugs etc to finish it off 100%

The sump is at a fabrication shop getting cut up to shorten it, and then lengthen to make up for the loss in volume where it has been shortened.

Saddle mounts (for the front engine mounting) turned up and as of this morning are installed. Hopefully it can go in for headers to be made if the exhaust shop has time next week.

Checked the rest of the clearances on my engine yesterday:

mains clearances
con rod clearances
con rod side clearances
crank end float
cam end float

All within spec, which is always a bonus! :p

Next step is to bolt the heads up which have been decked 60 thou and make sure the manifold fits still (may need to get manifold machined to suit.. may not!)

So since the pipes are complete, tonight the mock engine came out, along with the trans to go off on Monday for a service.

All ready for the real engine to come home!!

Project has still been ticking over.

Powerglide went off to the guru's and looks like that the previous owner has had a converter failure and this has sent shrapnel through the box. The gear set was pretty badly chewed up, but somehow the carrier, pump and everything else was still in as new condition. A gear set had to be ordered in from the states (I live in Australia) this came in last week, so am expecting a phone call within the next few days to say the gearbox is ready to go!

In the meantime, after finally completing all clearances and being happy with them I have stripped the engine down once more, cleaned until me heart was content, and have started final assembly.

Some photos of the strip down prior to any cleaning.

Main studs installed, and here I am starting work on the head studs. Loctite on the threads, then install a spacer and then torque them down so the loctite can set. Repeat x lots :D

Bottom end is all together (crank, pistons & rods, cam etc) Oil pump, timing cover, rear cover, windage tray, oil pickup.

Then things got interesting, the sump was modified by a friend who is a fabricator, it had to be shortened - and then "wings" added for oil capacity, however he forgot to weld back in the sump plug

I also went to install valve springs, and the fancy tool I paid ~$130 for cannot handle the spring pressure, so I'll sell it off and just take them into local machine shop who quoted me $80.

Currently also awaiting for custom length pushrods to turn up. So hopefully next weekend, fingers crossed engine will be ready to roll!

Been waiting way way too long for this piece of the puzzle which I got my hands on Monday: (mid engine plate)

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/altered2_zpscdd8fd14.jpg

So since then things have been moving at a pretty rapid pace, engine and trans are in and everything else around it is starting to go back onto the car.

Hit a snag with the clearance from the starter motor to the flexplate when it throws out, need to get the top of the starter motor machined so it will move the starter gear in closer to the flexplate.

Otherwise everything else has gone fairly smoothly.

More updates later..

Race car has been at a friends house for awhile now while we were building the engine and getting the engine and trans into the chassis, so it has now finally come back home.

Looking at this photo though the engine gets lost, I think it needs a set of twin turbo's

More tinkering. Base tune is in, soooo close to fire up! Off to work for 2 overtime shifts, then hopefully fire up Tuesday

Throttle body mounted, throttle cable bracket and fittings 95% complete. Will have to fabricate a small extension off the ball joint to reach the throttle body.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/altered6_zpsc0000d31.jpg

Starter motor shimmed up to within tolerences, and right hand side pipes installed. Starter wiring hooked up.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/altered7_zps7adda5f5.jpg

And lastly a test fit of the floor to check it still fits with the new engine plate, and different starter motor and wiring locations

All fluids are now in.

Fixed afew leaks here and there as expected.

However I cannot get the fuel rails to correctly seal against the injectors with 60psi flowing to them!

So have had to order the Edelbrock fuel rails to suit the manifold (was trying to run with a set of generic ones)

So another delay. Looks like my converter was built incorrectly, I have 14mm of converter pull out which is not ideal at all.

In layman's terms, the transmission is not being connected correctly to the motor and I have no gears.

So out comes the transmission and the converter, to be sent away.

I swear there are things put in this world to test our patience

Converter guy got back to me, he had he week off for a local car festival

Seems the original converter manufacturer just built a standard TH400 converter. So I need to order the TCI LS flexplate which is actually ~8mm thicker and then he still has to cut the converter open to add 5-6mm in length.

I was originally using the stock GM flexplate, so I am abit relieved to be told "you have to use the TCI one" as it is thicker, and carries the SFI rating. I just didn't want to have to spend the extra ~$400 if the stock one was going to be OK.

Awesome build mate:)
Should have some great drive ability around the track and get decent fuel mileage to boot!!!! Lol

So did you use all the same wiring harness and all the sensors and gizmos the engine had when if was factory installed?, well, more less?
Now you just to do some final tuning at the track right and cross your fingers:p:p:p

I still love the 23T, and if I did an LS engine it would be carbureted or blowthru with a turbo....
Can't wait to hear some et's from it!, what do you expect of it???
Do you know a guy named Collin who drives some kind of car with a big block ford engine!!!! We both did a carb conversion....

I stripped everything out of the loom that wasn't needed. Thinks like cruise control, traction control, MAF and everything related to the LS stock gearbox.

If I don't run an 8 sec 1/4 I will be cranky :)

18th came and went, didn't make it as the car was not ready :(

Got the torque converter back and all installed. Fitment is spot on, but seems something is up with the box as it just wont pump oil. Checked a number of things, but the box builder has asked it to be sent back (at his cost) for inspection.

So now just abit more waiting :(

Gearbox back in my hands, and bolted up. All working fine. Was great to see the wheels spin under their own power for the first time.

Booked in for a dyno tune on Friday.

Hoping to goto the local track for a little private test day Sunday, just to get my bearings inside the car etc. Then enter a local race meeting on the 29th.

What a massive few days, the work involved to get this done was just crazy.

1yr, 3mths since I took purchase of the chassis, and driving it up onto the trailer under it's own power I was just ear to ear smile, so much time, money, sweat and tears to see it all finally coming together, when I could have given up oh so many times.

One of the last pieces of the puzzle, like alot of other things on the car, had to be custom made. 10-32 UNF to M6 thread coupler. Isn't pretty at the moment, but it does the job. This is from the quick disconnect ball on the throttle cable -> throttle body.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/altered13_zps497877b9.jpg

Car loaded up on my trailer, first time it had been on the trailer and due to how low the car is had to unhitch the trailer from the car. I'll invest in some wheel chocks to stop the trailer from rolling forwards when this happens.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/altered14_zps2de3dc4f.jpg

Strapped down on the dyno ready to run, we didn't really achieve any indicative power figures, the slicks are too wide for the dyno and were rubbing slightly on a tie down point, and they just continued to spin no matter how hard it was strapped down. The tuner claimed he had never had to strap anything down this tight before in his time doing this. 800nm torque was recorded, and about 350rwhp at 5600rpm. It will spin to 7000 and make the most power there. AFR's were spot on, which was really the exercise of the day, to make sure everything was healthy to run.

"Dyno Queen"

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk24/adamreef/altered15_zpse04f5259.jpg

And then finally off to a friends import workshop for a wheel alignment, I joked with him it was the toughest car to make it's way into his shop, didn't go down so well. That's a GTR behind the car :D

Off to the local track this Sunday for a private test day, no timing system - more just getting a feel for the car, going through the burnout procedure, probably do a launch and then slowly come upto speed and deploy the parachute to get a feel for it.

Adam007
11-16-2014, 07:27 PM
Testing went well, the aim was just to get a feel for the car, and how it responded etc.

Track was very marginal, as soon as I put my foot into it the car just wanted to step sideways.

Have afew issues to sort through:

Electrical breaker tripped out after 4 laps up/down the strip. I think it is only a 40amp breaker, have to do some more research on this when I get home today.
Harness is too small - so I either need to loose some weight or purchase a bigger one :p I can get it on, but the adjustments are not accessible enough for my liking.

However even with these issues, I was happy with the day, I got to drive the car for the first time, and it went back on the trailer at the end of the day.

Due to my work commitments, I don't actually make a local race "meeting" until July 2015. I make afew of the off-street test nights, so I may organize to head to one of them. Thankfully, I make most of the meetings from July onwards.

Serviced up the race car today:

Engine oil and filter change
Drop 1l transmission oil, inspect and re-fill
Drop 1l diff oil, inspect and re-fill
Check converter bolts
Check rocker arm bolts

Then of course had to grab some new fuel and hear it roar again :leet:

The filters I use, just for interest sake, allows for easy inspection of whats inside the filter. These are an 8 micron Canton product.

Not a lot to report, RL been happening and between rainy weather and the end of 2014 race season, there has not been much opportunity to do much apart from look at the car.

I am another step closer however, got the technical inspection all completed and sent away yesterday. Heading out to my local track tomorrow for some more private laps for seat time.

A track ~6hrs away has a meeting on the 21st, and provided tomorrow goes OK + I get my log book back from ANDRA + it doesn't rain, I will be licensing the car at that meeting.

They are 33x15x15. Probably too big for the power I am making, but it's what the car came with.

Cheers

Finally got around to putting the videos together from the test day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rmPczsHUO0

Due to my work commitments, I don't actually make a local race "meeting" until July 2015. I make afew of the off-street test nights, so I may organize to head to one of them. Thankfully, I make most of the meetings from July onwards.

obviously you don't know what your doing , where are the 40 plus people standing around you and your car lining you up . someone for the right front tire and someone for the left ? 5 guys pushing you forward 7 guys pushing you back ? ect ? 4 people touching your car for no apparent reason .
