Back when I was younger, my Dad and I helped a local comp racer with his D/A car. Dick purchased Raymond Martin's stretched wheel-base Vega turn-key in 1978. Raymond won the '77 US nationals with it. It had a 287 s/b with Shepherd heads. And some other very trick stuff inside. Damn that thing was sweet. 287 inches of high winging heaven. Dick was one of the first to get one of Joe Liberty's new clutchless four speed transmissions. We qualified #1 at the Cajun Nationals in '79. Wound it to 10,000 on the line and side-step da clutch !

Jim races up here in the Pacific NorthWest div6. Stock Superstock and Comp are some of the coolest classes in racin. I used to build a SS/JA 71 Chevelle 402ci and we shifted @9000, v-springs lasted 40 runs.

I was in Vegas for the Divisional, the air wasn't good, Barometer was in the toilet. Jirka sent shockwaves through the whole pits with those runs!! Everyone was standing around thier grills, beer in hand, saying "A second under in Comp??? Dear God! Is nothing in this sport sacred??"

We have a friend that runs Comp, B,C,D,E/SM, and he says 10,000 is very common for him. I love watching him run...Liberty 5 speed in a Cavalier and a really small , small block.
