Default Street Driven 8 second car on 17 inch drag radials

After the 1320x event, I have had a bunch of people asking for some pictures and details about the car, so I thought it would be easiest to post some pictures and info in my own thread.

The car is a 1989 notchback with a 351 dart block stroked to 427 cid. I run tfs-r heads ported by TEA and an efi spyder. The blower is a procharger F-2. I tune the car via an accel gen VII. To many people's surpise, the transmission is a lentech AOD. I drive the car all over the place and don't own a trailer. It is by no means a gutted race car. It has a full interior and a stereo with a 10 inch subwoofer in the trunk. The car weighs in at a porky 3650 with me in it.

The thing that throws off most people about the car is that it pretty much looks like your average 13 second mustang with a set of 17 inch rims on it. The car has a stock hood and everything runs through a set of 3 inch tailpipes. The car sounds healthy, but nobody expects it to run the numbers it does. My current best et is an 8.91 at 160 mph.

I actually got my NHRA competition license on 17 inch rims. I think I might have been the first person in history to do that.

Anyway, here are some pictures:

exterior shot after an nmra race (normally there are no stickers on the car):

Pulling a heavy 17 inch wheel off the ground:

Just your average notchback:

I do have a set of drag rims, but have not actually made a full pass on them.

Thanks for the compliments. It means a lot coming from this community that has so many incredible cars.

how the hell do you get that car to hook on those 17 inch tires? what are your 60 foot times? most people can't get their stock motored cars to hook on 17 inch tires let alone your's that has to be 700+ horsepower, probably more with 160mph trap speed. that car is extremely badass.

It has had quite a few combinations, but never a 347. Back around 1998 it had a 357 with an s-trim on it. After the s-trim, it had a Novi2000 on it. From there, the Novi stayed on through a couple of different lightning block based motors (402 & 40. I eventually switched to the procharger F-2. The lightning block finally bit the dust in 2006 and I built the dart block.

It is a pretty basic suspension setup. Mostly upr stuff, nothing exotic. My 60' times are anywhere from 1.45 to 1.55 or so depending on track prep. The car makes a lot of power, so even with an ok 60' time, it will end up running a good number.

I think a lot of it is the ability to modulate the throttle. Most people just mash the throttle and expect their cars to hook and complain about the tires when it doesn't work.

I would estimate my car is closer to 1100 or so hp. One of these days I will actually put it on the dyno.

I feel bad for those unfortunate folks who haven't had a chance to see this car in person. It was far and away my favorite car at 1320x this past weekend and it was sitting in the pits all by its lonesome...no one around it. In fact, when I first saw it I assumed it was just a street car that belonged to one of the race teams that was there (it was parked near the Anger Management Racing trailer) and I thought, wow, thats a really clean fox. Then I saw it run and just about shat myself. I was in the tower with a room full of about 15 hardcore fans/racers and we all were like "Did that car just do that?"
It leaves the line kinda lazy and then just builds speed and looks like a train going down to the big end...
Dude, you have a serious bruiser on your hands there and much respect to you for it....AWESOME

1100 or so horsepower is definitely believable. you could probably clean house street racing or grudge racing somebody at the track. especially if you kept the hood closed. just awesome. period. the ultimate sleeper.
