Default 2000 ford escort zx2 cam position sensor problem

My friend has one with the check engine light is on and its saying cam position sensor problem..he"s changed the sensor and the plug end and then he clears the code but it comes back on in few miles..he says the car runs fine and has"nt lost any power..anybody have any ideals on whats wrong with it? Thanks in advance..

Bad VCT solenoid, broken tone ring on flywheel or timing belt off a tooth will all do it in those things.
