Default Best fuel for Nitrous? Ethanol, Methanol or Race Gas

I have just been wondering about this for a while. If you had a serious NOS engine and have a tight tuning window, what fuel would you run? E85, E98, M5, NOS Race fuel?

I have built 2 boosted combos for customer's lately and they are both E85 powered. It seems very cost effective over race gas and you are really able to turn up the wick over regular gas. It seems to be very forgiving for what it is.

I started running E85 in 2008 in a sbf, then in the winter of that year, I switched to E98 and stayed with that until last year. I sold my sbf stuff and got a bbc. Started on E98, and sprayed a 32N in each of two systems (roughly 550-600 hp total worth of nitrous). I felt I had the fuel tune pretty close, but it showed a little heat in the plugs with a fairly low timing number for a conventional headed bbc. My fuel supplier didn't have E98 for awhile, so once I ran out, I switched to C23, then to C16. I feel that I have the fuel tune-up pretty close to where it was before, yet I don't have ANY heat in my plugs now. I'm still adding a slight amount of timing each time I go to the track and it keeps picking up. With the way the plugs looked on ethanol, I don't think I would have added the timing that I have now. I don't know if I had reached the "limit" of the fuel, or if I should have fattened it up more. I kinda wish I had tried adding fuel to the tune and see if it picked up, but now I've bumped up the N pill a little more and feel that I have a handle on my race gas tune better than the ethanol tune at this point.

So, to answer your question, I think I would run race gas if you are spraying a healthy amount and are not trying to "learn" anything with the fuel.

I like being different, so I would love to get back on ethanol with a boat-load of spray, but don't want to risk hurting my engine to do it.

Thanks 10.5 and sixty feet. Anybody else have an opinion? I'd like to get as much insight as possible as to what people are using and why.

We found limitations with E85 and E98 when running big nitrous on our bike tunes.....Went to C23 and was able to clean up the tune nicely

That's good to know. I really thought the cooling effects of alcohol would open up the tuning window more.

Don't get me wrong, I love ethanol and think it's a great fuel to run, and you are basically getting "race gas" quality fuel for cheaper than 87 octane pump gas. In that respect, it's a wonderful thing. However, I do think that you do run into limitations with this fuel before you run into limitations with high octane race fuel. I would love to do more experimenting with the fuel to figure more out about it, but timing number for timing number, a/f ratio to a/f ratio, race gas is more forgiving than ethanol from what I've found so far with my big block.

Anything you can buy out of the pump at your local station is "pump gas" and is such is NOT blended as a performance fuel and that is all you need to know about that type fuel.

As for pure methanol or M5............alky has proven to NOT be a good nitrous fuel for large amounts of spray. The sheer mass of fuel needed, to achieve the needed BTUs to go with the added nitrous, just make it a poor choice.

Look at it this way............the TOP nitrous classes are not fuel limited...........they can run whatever fuel they want and gasoline is the choice..........for a reason.
