Default 2005 gmc 2500 won't go into 4 wheel drive.

Like the title says my 3/4 ton duramax won't engauge 4 wheel drive. The selector on the dash lights up when you push the button and I can hear a soft grinding like its trying to engauge. No dummy lights on the cluster light up either. Any body have this issue before?

sounds like the actuator in the frt. diff ..remove it and put it in 4 wheel drive and see if it works...if it does it may be further inside ..there is a fork with a ring on it that engages when the actuator pushes it ..that could be the problem of the actuator is good ...good luck

Having dirty fluid could cause the 4wd not to in gauge?

Thanks guys.
What's it take to change out the solenoid? I'm going on vacation next week and need my truck to pull my boat to the lake.

Alright, i can repeat it i guess.

Disconnect the actuator and try manually engaging the 4 wheel drive.

If you can get it into 4 wheel drive you may have an actuator problem.

If it's an auto 4wd the transfer case module in the dash could be fuct, get one from a wrecker and also easy to change!

Thanks for your input cockbreath, it's the first problem I've had with a truck that has 100,000 miles on it. IMO that's a pretty dependable rig. If it were a ford I would have had to replace multiple turbos, head gaskets ect....
