Default how fast with a 406 sbc?

I've been thinking recently about going this route to replace my boat anchor 385 and am wondering what combo and times people are getting out of these n/a. I am undecided as to which heads and carb I would run. Just looking for input. I don't wanna go cheap like I did on the motor I have now. Do it once and do it right.

I don't have the coin to put a procharger or vortech on right off the bat so am curious what it would complete but n/a.

thanks

you should be able to get more out of the 385... I would change the heads, cam and intake on what you have. Some decent heads and cam would probably help alot I dont know what you have for a converter/gear but there is probably some there too

But if you want to do another... build an 18/15 degree engine
I would not have a shafiroff short block, you would be better off to have an independent builder do it.

I was thinking about possibly getting a set of afr's, and the current intake is a victor jr. Rear end ratio is 3.42 which I know isn't ideal at all but I drive the car everywhere so anything lower isn't going to work, converter is anybodies guess. I agree, I was def expecting more out of it than mid 12's. It's going in for a dyno tune session soon so hopefully that does something. I'm almost at the point where I'm so fed up with it that i'd rather sell whats in there and start over, been through hell with the motor "builder".

Heads are junk, agreed. Cam is what the motor builder said would work for what I wanted to do with it (supercharger). I'm well aware the gear isn't optimal, I said from the very beginning I drive the car everywhere, I can't go anywhere with 4.10's and a 3 speed. I need the extra power just to make up for that, it isn't getting geared any lower. Convertor is a total mystery, yes. How fast was I expecting? 12.40.

Your could be way faster with different induction but if your set on going to a 400 the bigger bore will be a huge plus.

My 406 ran 930s at 2600lbs. Still getting the chevelle ready that its in now, chevelle is a little heavier which sucks but hoping for lower 10s.

i hate Chevy..lsx are kinda of cool..anyway, my cousin and i was partners in a Vega for the past few years, the 400 in the car was som simple and cheap it made people sick, heads where old school ported double humps, victor jr intake, speedpro hyper pistons with a small dome, about 12-1 compression, cheap scat h beam rods, and a used ebay solid roller cam set up, a holley 950hp..car ran 10.70 all day..had over 300 passes on it when he sold the car..

The first thing i'd do to what you have is get some afr 195 or tfs 195 with the cnc chamber, an rpm air gap manifold, and change that cam...
Go to a 3.73 gear and put a good 10 inch converter (ATI, TSI, and others) in it you should see mid-high 11's at least. Heck it should go 12.40 like it is, whats the timing at and how do the plugs look??
my brothers 331 sbf runs 11.80-115mph at 3350lbs, it has 192 high port heads, 9.5:1, a comp hyd roller, eddy air gap, 3.73 and a 3500 stall. It drives anywhere..
