earnhardts was around 155mph. not drag racing but led to modern era of safety equipment. its not really the speed but the angle of impact especially with these garbage drag racing seats that alot of people run.

You now have to have a positive stop on the brake pedal to prevent the pedal from "over centering" and getting stuck on.

BTW the crash didn't kill the guy. It was after effects from the fire.
A Good Dude was Lost That Day...Still Can't Believe John Is Gone....I know exactly which event you speak of, Still saddens me when I see his brother pull out John's old Johnny Dangerously Camaro!!

Again, not trying to upset anyone or cause bad memories, but I keep reading about all these slow guys bitching about,
or lacking basic equipment, and I really want them to be safer.
Guys are racing in shorts, sweats & tank tops and not thinking about the other lane!!
Just because you are 12-14's, doesn't mean the guy next to you isn't in a death trap, or a fire breathing monster.
Especially at a T & T, and everyone is thrown together.

Everyone should be in a -5 suit & collar on a dragstrip.
Now if they only run the street guys, slow guys together, to help keep kids off the street fine.
As long as you never mix them with racecars, let them wear their helmet only!!
Nothing wrong with letting them race as cheap as possible.

I'm all for growing the sport with new blood.
I've also been on fire, and next to guys on fire, so you just never know??

Good luck & race safe everyone!!

i think 5 suit.gloves, shoes, and a head and neck restraint system. some type of wrap around seat and not these garbage summit plastic seats or the cheap kirkey seats. people will put 20k in an engine but buy the cheapest safety equipment.most deaths or serious injuries can be prevented in racing. 4000ft of shutdown should be mandatory along with no trees/woods after the shutdown area.

Because of this crash, I put alot of extra safety pieces into my new car when I built it. The stop for the brake pedal, head restrant set up for the cage, and other small things. When we were on our way home from the funeral, I was TOLD by my wife that it would have all the new pieces. It still amazes me to see people bitch and moan abot having to have gloves, or pants because it is manditory.

Didn't upset me one Bit.....A thread like this should serve as a reminder that we do this for fun,And everyone wants to make it back home still ticking and providing for our Families, not in a box! I once saw a Drag car barrel roll going only around 85mph..the driver had aborted the run and was simply coasting through the finish line and something happend and over he went.....talked to the guy a few years later and he brought up his wreck...said when it happen he was just about to reach up and unbuckle his helmet....Good thing he didn't!!! A lot of racers do that too...Never remove your safety gear until your run is complete and you are off the race course, can't say how many times I see people coasting through the shut down taking off their gear!!!

that was in phenix city correct. the guy (they called him hump)cut the seat belt out of another car and laid it across his lap to make it look like he had a seat belt.he was only doing about 55 or 60 mph when it happened.

The staying buckled in and helmet on is an excellent point.
I was stupid 20 years ago also, and would screw around with the window, belts, etc while still on the track.
Now I stay focused, completely strapped in and equipment on until I'm stopped, and turn off the computer.
Then I look around, if it's safe, I take off my stuff, if the chutes are blowing around, or in the way, I get them 1st.

Hell, when I started, I had food and drink on the passenger seat, hot in Alabama!!

A lot of good points, and ammunition to use when these kids/tough guys complain about needing a jacket & collar!!

Thanks everyone.

That was Bob Swartz. Never did hear for certain but it's believed that a front steering link failed that had been welded on previously. Not sure that the motor came out either... I got to the track and walked up into the tower seconds after he crashed so I didn't see it and had no desire to go down and look... he was a friend of mine. Years before back in '90 Terry Stumpf crashed his mid-10 second '68 Mustang when the crank broke (it was a stroked cast iron 460 out ot a 505 I believe) and ripped the bottom out of the block and tore the trans off as well. He slid into an opening in the metal guardrail and hit at the A pillar. The track owner and I were among the first down there before any paramedics and we all felt he was just knocked out from the crash. Little did we know he had massive internal bleeding and a doctor later told us he couldn't have been saved had there been an operating room onsite. That one hurt the most as he was one of my closest friends. It made it damn hard to go race the next weekend. But I did, and it was Terry that I dedicated my win at the NHRA Div 5 meet at Brainerd to. Every time I drive by the cemetary I think about him.

WRONG!

He was in the car! I knew him for 30 years and was the first one that discovered he was i the car and dead. The trailer that was on fire was my main concern after I new he was gone.

Don't have to be going fast to get killed in a car, that's for sure. How many folks have run off the road into a ditch or hit a tree at 45 mph and been killed on the street? Even if your car can only run 80 something mph through the quarter, that is definately fast enough to get hurt or killed. That being said, I don't wear my helmet to make a pass in my truck (run's 84mph through the quarter). I always wear it in my car, along with a sfi jacket, but no pants, shoes, or gloves. The car is a low 12 second car at close to 110mph. It has a rollbar and harnesses.

I had heard from someone else that was there that he WAS in fact on jackstands but the car fell off of them when it torqued up. Does this agree with what you heard or saw?

As far as other incidents, there was a recent case of a death in a 10-second car (I think it may have been a Maverick).

I was fortunate enough to walk/stumble away from a 140mph diagonal shot into the guardrail, taking out 5 sections of double-armco rail. I remain amazed to this day how far the harness and my body stretched in the impact, allowing my helmet to hit a rollcage roof diagonal that was at least 7" away from me when stretching hard towards it.
