Default How to get a classic cars title in NJ barn find no title

I'm looking into buying a rambler off a guy in PA for my dad, seller says it was in storage for 20yrs he bought it off an older lady that said it was her sons and cannot find the title for the car.

Is there any way I can get a title for this car in NJ or is it to much of a pain in the ass to even consider it worth the time?

Seller says he will give me a bill of sale stating he sold it to me not sure if that will help me out or not.

Did some searching on google about it njdmv web site says I can possibly get a title for an abandoned vehicle which is not really the case.

Figured someone on here in NJ has been through this situation before to see what steps I will have to take to get a title if it's worth it, just don't want to buy a car and it end up a track only deal looking for a weekend cruiser/show car for my dad

NJ sucks..... I have heard of people titleing in the state of Maine.. very easy to do there, if the car is over 15 years old!!!

cool thanks. the car is a 1964. I was actually just looking at a web site in maine that says this
"* Pricing for vehicles 1947 to 1985 assume the vehicle is considered road worthy and will pass state inspection and/or inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. Vehicles that are not considered road worthy are $795."
http://www.getnewtitle.com/pricing.html
hopefully there is a cheaper way than this lol the car has been sitting for years the seller says so theres no way it's going to pass inspection till I put some $ into it

International title services, think they are outta Vegas. All you need is a bill of sale, or make the seller go through and get ya a title.....

In PA you can file for lost title and have it in 2 or 3 days.

broadway title is the link above with the $795 quote I should call them just to make sure i'm not miss understanding their site.
I'll check out International title services. Also the bill of sale can that be from they guy that has the car now or does that have to be signed or anything by the last owner that has had the car registered?

Just need the VIN and a bill of sale. My Uncle used them last year for a street rod he built..... was an old farm truck, just gave the VIN and "bill of sale", think it was like $150 and took less than a month

I've done Broadway a few times so far, no problems. However I also went to the DMV/ Local cop shop prior to purchase and explained what was going on and asked them to run the VIN to make sure it wasn't stolen or other crap.
Good Luck,
BobH

PA purged all old titles a few years ago, i had a title in hand for my chevelle and I wanted to put it back on the road in 2008 after it had sat unregistered for 12 years. PA had no record of the car existing. In Pa you deal with a independent tag/notary. It took 2 trips and cost a little under $200. The owner of the car would have to go through the process and i'm sure without a title it's going to be a bit harder.

you could "sell" it to someone in RI (if you have any friends up here) and leave it in their name for a little while and then buy it back. RI doesnt have titles, so when you "bought" it back you get a title from your state. i think all you'd have to do is make sure it got registered in RI and youd be all set...sounds silly but ive had a couple friends do it
