Default Dexron VI transmission fluid

Can I still use the Dexron III transmission fluid instead of using the Dexron VI fluid. This is for a 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo with 3.5 V6 automatic. The Dexron VI is harder to find and is double the price of the Dexron III.I figured the fluids were still about the same just a GM sales tactic but wanted to be sure. Thanks

Every Walmart and Autozone I've been to keeps the Dexron VI in stock. Its a fully synthetic fluid and that's why its more expensive. I'd put the recommended fluid back in the car. Its gonna be less than $50 to change the fluid and filter if you do it yourself

Yes you can, but it may shift a little firmer due to the difference in fluid, as the transmission is calibrated to the dextron 6. Won't harm a thing, as long as you use a quality fluid.

Dex VI is not a full synthetic.
