In regards to what wires should not be running close to other wires, the real problem exists when you run the MSD box to coil wires/distributor or crank trigger wires too close to ANY wire that is going to a motor ie water pump, fan, etc. Years ago, we chased this for a full season. Live & learn.

Should I power the box with a direct 12volt wire or with a relay?

Never use a relay/fuse or hot spot on the 10 gauge voltage supply wire to the MSD. Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure kylePBZ got his fixed with a new cam button.
But I'm still having problems with mine.

Got my new "adapt a cap" & adjustable rotor in Friday.
Had to go back to work Friday morning. Should be home in 2-3 weeks.
Hoping the cap will solve the problem. I'm running the 8570 dizzy.
It's the smallest cap they make. I think the terminals are only 3 1/4" apart across the cap.

jrock983

If you havent already, go back and read this entire thread.
Have got some real good info in here from experienced guys.

Mine has been a combination of problems so far. -------Worn dizzy gear and bad 3-stage retard box so far.
At 1st mine was retarding 10-12 degrees. The new dizzy gear got it down to only 5-6 degrees now.
Also was having trouble starting it (spitting back, acted like it was running on 4-6 cyls) ------turned out to be the 3-stage retard box.

Wow --------18 degrees is alot.
As soon as I get home, Im gonna check the orange, black, purple, & green wiring and see what Ive got.
Ive checked it before and thought it was correct but now Im 2nd guessing myself.
Also got the big dizzy cap to try.

My only problem now is its retarding 5-6* when reving and sputtering in & out down the track.

Whats so strange to me is when I set my timing up to 41* to compensate for the 5* retard, It actually starts easier (no kicking back or laboring)
& didnt sputter going down the track. Ran the best its ever ran at that track and the best 60' time ever.

What kind of dizzies you tried----------- Are they all MSDs or what?

Yes all msd distributors, have a fluid dampner . Yea mines will idle fine but as soon as I try to bring up the rpm's it retards , I'm seeing no reason to think its wiring I've had my car for 6 years now why would wiring be backwards suddenly. Tried new gear didn't help

all this talk of advance retarding really is making me second guess put a 6a box and pro billet distributor in my car

Have you made any major changes or did it start doing it out of the blue?
Mine ran fine with the previous engine ----- a very silmilar 468 with cast iron heads with total timing at 35*
Dizzy was not locked then but all other ignition is the same.

Don't mean to high jack, but I just moved my ignition box and retard box inside my car,and now its throwing a flame out of the carb when I try to start it. Does moving the ignition components affect the timing that much?!?!?! Or am I have issues with wiring.

Or i just thought of this,if you don't ground the other stages on the retard box will it cause the timing to go wacky? Iam thinkkng its something with my wiring, cause yesterday it fired up and I ran it for a few then killed it. Today I installed my seat and now this haplened....hmmm....think Iam onto something now.

I have ran mine with the wires loose on my 3 stage retard, dont remember an issue. I do however, now keep a zero pill in the ones not hooked up. I know if you have a pill in the stage not hooked up it will retard that amount. (I move my timing back this way when test n tuning).

Yup,I think something came loose or pinched when I put the seat back in,cause it fired right up yesterday no problems.
