Default mid engine/rear mount transmission for sbc?

Trying to think of a unique project to play with, and I've always thought a mid engine set up would be fun....but, and i have'nt even checked into anything yet, is there any transmission/rear transaxles that will work with a sbc in a situation like this? Something strong, 450-550hp range that wont implode?

Auto/manual-which would add to the fun, but no preference...just did'nt know if there was anything out there on the market, anything existing that can be upfitted with stronger guts, etc...so figured with the diversity on the board, somebody might know of something. Sandrails come to mind, but i dont know what they use for engines/tranny's...and like I said, I hav'ent searched anything yet, this is the first stop.

I have seen the 425 transaxle used in a mid engine setup with a big buick motor. Was a neat deal if you like wheelstands on demand.

late model corvette parts can be pushed into service. Think c5/c6. The recipe is there

The Corvair guys have been doing that stuff for years.
The original is the old Crown kit which bolts a small or big block Chevy to the front of a 66-69 Corvair Saginaw.
Then there are the guys making new adapters to bolt a regular 66-up Saginaw to a Corvair differential.
Guys have used the 4L60E auto/Getrag diff from the C5 corvettes
Guys have also used a Powerglide with an adapter to bolt to a Corvair differential.
As mentioned, using a th425 or 325-4L is what guys call a Toronado conversion.
Here is a guy with a Powerglide and a Winters quick change diff http://www.v8vairs.com/images/EvansArch/evans.13.jpg
