Default Turbo 400 shift Problems

What would cause the trans not to shift from 1st to 2nd gear while running down the track, pulls great in 1st,shift to second it stays in first, ratchet shifter twice car goes into drive and pulls the rest of the way down the track. If I drive the car around the neighborhood (neighbors love that) it shifts fine from first to second, also driving around the pits, its fine.Checked shifter linkage and its moving the lever into correct position on trans, could it be somthing in the valve body or is it ijn the trans itself? Thanks for any help, its killing me at the track.

Sounds like the sprag just took a dump as long as your sure the shift linkage and adjustment is ok.

Would the sprag be an eractic problem? I ran the car at Pinks in May up at Maple Grove and experienced the same problem, checked linkage found nothing wrong( I'm check by shifter cable going all the way in park and removing the cable and making sure trans linkage is right position, then the same for 1st gear. I came home and installed a B&M shift kit, raced Cecil shoot out and YB Nats. with no problems, raced yesterday and problem came back.I saw another thread were a guy was using a ratchet shifter and had problems, he replaced cable and shifter. If cable was stretched would the park and low gear check still work?

Would the sprag be an eractic problem? No a bad / damaged sprag will not work , than work again.
What type of valve body is in the trans. Auto, Full manual , Transbrake?
If it is an Auto valve body than do this to test the trans. Make 2 passes with the shifter in D and see if it shifts 1-2-3 .without missing 2nd gear
Then do another 2 passes and shift it manually. Tell how it works...

If your sure the shifter adjustment is right , then Im steering towards a sprag thats finished.

Get rid of the transgo manual valve body!
It is a low budget, low horsepower setup. It uses mostly the stock channels and valves except a modified 1-2 shift valve and spring, Some of the valves still have to move or stroke in their bores. Any assembly error of the vb with the springs could cause issues.

No , it would not leave first gear. The entire trans is based on adding another component to make a gear change which overruns the previous gear.

I'm having a similar problem...new trans from TCI TH-400 competition full manual reverse valve body...worked fine first few times to the track...never sprayed this trans...had a ratchet shifter and changed to TCI Outlaw shifter...same thing...it would hesitate to shift into 2nd but it WOULD shit after hitting the rev limiter...not too much power I don't think...low 10's in 3000# camaro...drive easy and shifts fine..???
