Federal Class A & B CDL Requirements

Disclaimer: All content as is, no warranty. More

FMCSA defines several CDL classes based on vehicle weight, type, and cargo. While most states do not require a CDL for driving large RV's, some do require special non-commercial licenses structured after the federal classification. The two classes applicable to RV's are A & B, which are defined below:
  • Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.
If you are not sure what the various weights mean, please see Understanding RV Weights.

Don't put any stickers on the outside of the trailer thru florida if you do it's considered a commercial use vehicle and you will have to have a dot # on it. and you will have to have a hazmat reg. for any type of chemical you have in it and In this state you can't carry any more than 5 gal of fuel ...It's a $10,000 fine

A RV isn't a commercial vehicle so no need for a CDL to drive your personal vehicle. If your legal in your home state you legal anywhere in the USA.

As mentioned earlier I would not have any decals/lettering on the trailer. The are many horror stories out there about guys getting pulled over and being parked. The arguement is if you compete for a purse and/or receive sponsorship in any form, then it's a business and requires a CDL. I think the chances are slim that you'd be picked up, but in this economy it wouldn't surprise me. Be careful how you answer any questions on the side of the road.

Long as it is not for hire you do not need one. All though laws are changing and are going to get stiff. Go ot cvsa2010 and check it out.
