Default NHRA Pro Stock Transmission Question

The 5 speeds used by the NHRA Pro Stockers is technically a Manual Tranny, but do they really ever use a clutch, and if they do, is it used like a typical clutch, or is it used for other purposes? Just something I have always wondered?

The clutch is used for the starting line only.(or to pull into the water box or whatnot, you drive it like a normal car except you don't need the clutch to shift)It is set up to slip off the line and a little in the gear changes to keep the tires for spinning.

When you shift, the trans is designed to "pop" out of the lower gear and go into the next one.You do not use the clutch to shift.Just pull or push the lever as hard as you can.

Goto the Liberty transmission website,I think it shows a pic of the inside of the trans that all the NHRA pro stocks use.I have one in my turbo t-bird and LOVE it.Great trans and allmost bulletproof.

COOL!, One More question if you don't mind. You just pull or push the lever straight forward or back, you dont have to move it side to side at all when you shift?

Correct, just back and forth. Its a lil hard to put into words, but all the linkages for the gears are attached to the shifter. Theres a keyway which is a "zigzag" from top to bottom. When you push or pull the shifter, it engages that particular gear, and when you do the opposite, it pulls or pushes the next linkage to push the trans into the next gear. As I said, hard to explain. If you saw a shifter, it would make perfect sense.

There you can see the gate in the shifter. I believe it's termed as a "Z" gate because of it's shape. Obviously, the more gears, the more vertical "Z"s there will be.

Liberty has a "street" version of the trans..it's called the LCS5000, and anyone with a spare $5000 laying around can purchase a brand new one. (or $6100 for the magnesium case one)

Tell ya what...as you can see many on here love to show ya.
But if you really want to get a grip on something.
If you never seen one...
You need to go to a track during a big race.
You could always talk to a vendor...
or heres a plan...

Find out what track Billy Glidden is going to be at next time.
Introduce yourself to Billy in the pits quietly when he standing around yacking.
Tell him you are on the Yellowbullet...
If he is not busy between rounds...Guaranteed he will spend a couple of minutes with you or maybe even show you the cockpit of his Bullet(car)!!!

If you can't find him, there are many others on here as you can see at the track that will do the same.

We... Drag Racers are the most competitive, fightin-est SOB's of any creature that walk the Earth on two legs.
Most the time we can't stand eachother on the track. Even in the pits we only put up with eachother while racing...thats it!!!

But when it comes to chilling out, relaxing and talking about cars, go fast parts or just going fast period....(did I mention women??? or men if you are a female racer)
We will love ya like a brother or sister and yack our asses off!!!

Again, there are many that would love to show ya...Billy is one of the most noted on here and the reason I used him for a example!!!

This is what I did many years ago when I was a kid...and I got to talk to some of the greats..like Billy's father Bob when he was younger then Billy!!!
After that I ended up working in the business for a while all the way up and through college as I attended. I got to work with some of the greats. Lingenfelter, Jenkins, Duckworth, Borokowski, Haas, Maskin, Roush, Lepone, Musi, The Great Lee Sheperd, Sperry Bros, Allen, Foltz, Elkins, Nickens, Fisher, Shanchez, Bodine Bros and many many others....

So...
Get out to a track...ask questions...find out for yourself.
As long as it is not a secret new technology and you are not competition you will probably find the answer you are looking for!!!

Have fun...

ps. buy a T-shirt from the Yellowbullet here when they are available and also one from your favorite racer!!!

Sorry for rambling...its just a good day to be alive and a American!!!

All the gear ratios are the same as the Doug nash 4+1, so I imagine(hope) that you could beef up your old Nash with these parts.
I am very fond of the stick cars
