Default do aftermarket bbc heads really outdo ported factory stuff?

I dont ask a lot of questions on this board as I prefer to just read and learn but I would like to separate the bs from reality...

that said, in this case, how well would a set of mildly ported bbc heads(say 049s/ 781, or even semi closed chamber like the 290) with big valves, fare against an untouched bbc oval port head -for example a brodix race rite, or merlin or so.

can they keep up, or is it truely worth it to spend the money on the aftermarket stuff? how about the rectangular port bbc heads under 320cc?

I would like to know.

Good aftermarket heads will beat out a set of ported stockers dollar for dollar.

At the power level you are talking about, I would run a 781 oval port head and save your money for other parts. You probably don't even need the bigger valves to get to the 500-550 area. Unless weight is a consideration.

Well not to say 40hrs. is to much but, I think 20hrs. is more like it and as far as price just for port work $500. If you want all chambers ballanced out it would be more $ just depending on where they are at. No Im not the best but I do alot of porting, on all kinds of heads. any way ..... Good luck

I'm shocked to read that people are even STILL hand-porting cylinder heads. I scratch my head and just as "why?" ???
There are so many full blow CNC'd heads, and just mildly CNC'd heads out there. Not to mention consistency of "hand-porting" doesn't hold a candle to CNC porting.
