here's what i've been told (by some stock-class racers) 741's are the least desirable no aftermarket support...
489 and 742 are about equal in strength but the 489's like to split bearing caps..

i have to run one in my rambler (w/4speed) because of it being a "corporate" rear end...i COULD use a dana but i don't see my 290 needing to haul that much extra weight...

can't run a 9" because NHRA sez so...anyway, i've broke those before,too.

I run 742 and a 489 with 391 gears and 430 gears with a spool and 35 spline axles in a 3200 lbs ROADRUNNER with no problem but i put a brake in and i started braking gears so i put in a DANA in it and all i can say is MAKE ALL THE POWER YOU WON`T TO YOU WON`T HURT IT and now 5.80 AT 126 in a 1/8 in a 3300 lbs DUSTER with a DANA i guess some guys can get a 83/4 to work and they are a good rear end but look if a 83/4 was so strong whay did CHRYSLER put DANAs in HEMI CARS? THINK ABOUT THAT

I will preferred any 8.75 stock rear end against any stock 9" rear end any day,

I have seen 4 cylinder cars break the nose carrier on those stock pumpkins 9" and ruin the day at the track for everybody!

We used to weld a narrow pc of 1/8" steel in line with the caps on the back of the housing then weld a a 3/8 flangle nut to that in line with the center of the cap. Drill a hole thru and use a socket head cap with a jam nut. Set a very light pre laod (20-25 in/lbs). Seal the screw as needed. Trans brake away,go fast, won't break caps. It worked for us. Or get the aluminum thru-bolt housing,it is a good piece once you change the cheesy thru bolts Mopar put in them.JD Lobosco
