It really does DEPEND on alot of things: 1) What kind of car you start with 2) What kind of car you build (tube chassis vs pan car) 3) How much of the work you do yourself 4) Is it multi-purpose If you want to build a car that you don't car about looks or "correctness", do EVERYTHING yourself, you could probably build a car that would run the number for under $15K? On the opposite side of things, if you have the best of the best and everything pro built, you could easily build a $50k-plus car. For me, it will be somewhere in-between. I'm restoring my body with the best parts I can, so that's where alot of my cash will go, but I'll do alot of the labor myself. This car will not be completely cut up, so it can be restored back to original down the road, if I so desire... I liken these cars to the stock-suspension, drag radial or true ten 5 car that are hot right now. Most of the cars could win any car show entered, have a kicken engine program, and still retain the spirit of the car. The VW drag racing communities is one of the best in the industry. Very family oriented, very open and inviting if you've new. I've always said that there will always be VWs drag racing some where... Check out the websites I listed earlier, as well as http://www.thesamba.com for Great Classifieds (lots of good deals right now) and good source of info, as well as http://www.shoptalkforums.com for good info and community as well. If you have any questions, I'm just a PM or phone call away... |

That sounds cool. Got any pics of it? V8 Bug - Nothing personal, but the V8-in-a-Bug has never done anything for me. Most of the ones I've seen are slower than what they could do with the same amount of $$ on a traditional setup. Just doesn't look right IMO, but your car does look pretty clean... |

nice thread
![]() your car is looking good too chad, it takes a lot of time and work to do it right. im going to start working on another street car project in my spare time too; just someting to put around in and save a little gas. been hanging out here for a while trying to learn a little bit. ive got lots of vw projects, been a vw guy from day one. except for driving my suburban i dont know what it would be like to have a domestic car. although i think about building one someday. a buddy and i have a 73 dart were going to toy with soon though. as mentioned the vw community is very welcoming and a big family. i wanted to step it up and play with the big boys in the vw world. this last summer i got lucky and feel very fortunate to pick up an existing proven chassis car. all it needed was just a motor but since im taller then hte average person i had to do a few mods. were looking to have some good success when things are sorted out with the new efi, engine, setup. even though ill have close to 25k into it we will still be off from the very fast guys. building a ultimate street car vw isnt far off from building a domestic car in similar fasion except for the motor. the limiting factor for the vw is the pounds per cubic inch of the car. when compared to a domestic car most vw's wll be roughly 12 to 13.5 lbs per cube whereas most domestic cars will be 8 to 9 lbs per cube. if you were to biuld a comperable engine you would be looking at similar cost to a domestic car. the top leaders in the unlimited headsup (our pro mod class) are making around 5hp/cube and are running 8.40's @ 165 or so. they weigh 13lbs/cube. anyways, good to see some of the brutha's haha dean
