I noticed while driving today if i just leave the car in drive sometimes it will stay in first longer than normal then shift into second but not into third. that said If i manually shifted the car everything worked fine. the thing that confuses me is its kind of sporadic as it doesn't happen all the time. Also at one point while it was doing this i pulled it into second then back to drive and it finally shifted into third.
I would just like to know any possible suggestions on what to check. I looked at the modulator and it is hooked up and the vacuum lines appear to be in great shape. I haven't looked at anything farther than that.
Original to the car 1970 Impala never been rebuilt or serviced to my knowledge, fluid is old but doesn't smell burnt and is still appears in decent condition color wise not low either. modulator hose is connected to the manifold also appears to be in good condition. I've been daily driving the car for a year now with no prior issues.
Thanks guys I really appreciate the advice, Ill look into getting it rebuilt.
ill try the re-conditioner just for the time being, but ultimately id like to get it gone through.
Hutch, Id like to say i got a great life out of it but me being 21 i hadnt exactly got to enjoy it that long lol, but again thanks.
Pay attention to Hutch's post. It is spot on.
Trans "conditioner" is evil JUNK. Extremely hard on internal hard parts. Get the trans rebuilt and a rebuilt converter. The stuff is 45 freaking years old for God's sake....

Fact or opinion? I don't push snake oil, but I've resurrected dozens of transmissions for folks who flat out don't have the money for a rebuild with GM trans fluid conditioner, not Trans X. I am always very specific when I make this recommendation. Months or years later when I actually go into that unit it's no worse off hard parts wise than anything else I get on the bench.
This is a racing forum and there is a certain amount of trans snobbery to be expected but on a 45 year old trans, I'd try it in a heartbeat.
I plan on getting it rebuilt as soon as i get the money, since this is my one and only car i just wanted to see what it may be and what i could do being as i know very little about transmissions. i parked the car and my father is letting me borrow one of his to get to work and back for now.
By the way, i had to drive it to work the otherday and now there's what appears to be some clutch material on the end of the dipstick, so its getting pulled and rebuilt with a new converter as soon as i can afford it.
