Like I said 10.5et wouldn't be hard on pump gas. I've been 9.05 @ 147.5 on pump gas with a 496 car weighs 3400lbs. Show me a pump gas BBC with about the same cid that runs that.
very nice,is that with a stock block, no power adders?
I heard their is a plate that can be put in the valley that will allow you to run a solid roller?
yea you can do 10.5's easy with 66 x's Cast iron or E heads or high ports with a couple diff. CI set up. my gto ran 10.5's easy with a 462 combo for years.
pontiacs have style..and they ran very well on the street, which made them immensely popular, even when outclassed at the dragstrip..
there is very little reason to not run a pontiac in racing today..we get the same weight as sbcs, and our heads are actually cheaper than chevys for cfm used..cranks, rods, and pistons all cost the same..aftermarket blocks are a little more pricey than chevy..
i think i have bdhabits old cv-1 blower intake..now thats a good combo to run versus a sbc..or even a bbc..
guys that swap chevys into pontiacs probably voted for the kenyan monkey-eater too..too weak minded to do the right thing..
two 66 GTOs two bbc chevys i ran many bbc in my GTOs i am now down to just one gto that is what been in the one car chevy engines for over 31 years if you want to get picky the engine now is a 632 it is not a chevy its a donovan im not going to a pontiac power. there fine but i like the way its been 2 years from new when the 389 could not hold up
thanks guys,I had to get a photo bucket acc to post some picks .
I had a 468 bbc with a 288 solid roller ran 12.20s but somehow got water in the oil that took out the crank.
I had a 383 laying around that was in my truck so I put that in 13.20 motor 12.20 on a 125 shot sucks
then I picked up a luv truck 434 sb 10.13 @ 133 on motor it was a lot of fun for a few years but it long gone.
How I want to step up the bird some, time to build a motor.
I was looking at building a 496 bbc I have a set of rhs 320's and a comp cam 260 270 @50 695 714 lift was going to get 11 12 to 1 pistion's and a 4.385 rod that should get me in the tens
I dident think I could get their with a pontiac motor as lest not with a stock block do you know of a good combo useing a stock 400 block that would get me in the mid tens on 100 pump gas?
10's are easy with stock block Pontiac engines just like anything else, choose the right pieces. My pick for heads would be CV-1, a roller in the same ballpark size wise to the bbc 1 you have, 11 to1 compression, use a stock lenght aftermarket rod, a good flat top piston and enjoy. Mysticmissle's combo would also be an ideal combination to follow.
I'm hoping to get my car well in the 10's at 5000+ feet altitude with a factory 4 bolt 428 block and crank, Venolia pistons, ESP rods and my Butler ported RPM E-heads with a solid flat tappet cam. My sled last weighed in at 3340lbs
My old set up was similar to this. Stock 455 S/D Solid roller 550 lift 254/260@50 Butler ported e-heads victor intake 1050 dom t-400 8in converter 4:10 gear M/T et street tires. 10.40@128 sea level 10.80@124 5000ft. 3240lbs
Ran a small 150 shot on nitrous for awhile 9.50@140
I have always thought of a pointiac motor as a lower rpm engine 5500 red line, much as the 401/425 nilehead buick and 455 olds.
Best thing to have on the street, you could smoke a sbc, light to light with tork.In the 70's when Hp was killed off with smog crap the poncho was doing very well in stock form on the street do to its long stroke.sd 455's were hard to beat.
At the track with a 5500 stall 4.56 / 4.11's rpm's seem to be the name of the game, IE: best way to get the best 60 ft witch = best et .
And today with huge lift rollers, the valley with open in the center lifter bores tend to brake off the lifter bore part of the block.
Not looking for a fight, but how dose one deal with this??
Any good links to engine builds??
OK, here comes the remarks
Read up at performance years. Pontiac reliability is down pat well into the low 8 zone, maybe even more, depending on what you call reliable. Lil Jack, Langer or any other Fast Ponti-yakers can correct me if I am wrong.
66 Pontiac Lemans 461 pontiac pump gas motor 3900lbs full interior street car, 6.95@98mph in the 1/8th. Only turn it 5400rpm. Don't get me wrong chevy motors run but the torque of a pontiac is unbelievable
I have a '73 Chevy Blazer that I swapped a Pontiac 400 into! Back in the 80's I had a T/A clone daily driver that ran mid-13's with a low compression 400 Pontiac. When it got rear-ended and totalled I swapped the 400 into my Blazer. I towed my S/G Vega with it for several years.
Stay away from rock n roll!!! Anyone else. That list is a gd place to start. I'd recommend butler SD or seen as how u r west coast almost pacific performance. Is also worthy of ur $
My reason for switching was reliability. Kept spinning rod bearings on the factory equipped 400. Went to a 355 Chevy then later to a 427, then 468 big block Chevy. Back in the late 70's it was all about price, reliability, and availibility.
Finally ended up with a 615' with Pontiac heads!!
