Default Holley 950 HP-Good for ???

Sorry but this carb confuses me. I've read it has smaller venturis then an 850.
So just how big of a drag motor should a guy use this carb on? I'm looking for one for a 427 sbf with 240 high ports turning 7000. I was thinking I would need a 950-1000 carb. Hp 950 cut it or not?
Thanks

After sending my carb to my carb guy, i'll never buy a carb and just bolt it on. My 850 flows over 980, so i don't call it a 850 anymore. If you already have the 950 send it to a carb guy, Mines in my sig, let him flow it and open it up if needed. My 980 is going for 550 cubes according to my carb guy.

Wow thats impressive! So is that 950 untouched or "massaged"? 830 cfm just doesn't seem like enough to run low 9's with. But what do I know.

Someone told me Holley called it a 950 because they didn't want a new carb to be called a 830 when they already had one that flows 850 and called a 850.

I've run 8.59 with an 800 DP carb, stock except for jetting, on an iron head 406 in my old dragster. A 950 flows a little more, and certainly should run fine when tuned correctly. An 850 or 1000 HP might add a few HP, but unless you are class racing to get the most out of it the 950 will be fine. Not all 950's are the same, a Holley is a 1.375 venturi, a QF 950 a 1.45 like the one I put together below. QF also has a 1.50 venturi they call a 1000, and the 1.565 venturi they call a 1050, the same venturi as the 850 and 1000HP Holley. All with a 1.75" throttle blade.

So a 1050 dominator would be overkill? I am just trying to build it to it's full potential. Thanks again for the input

How much does the car weigh? Gear and converter stall? Current ET's?

It weighs about 3000 with me in it. c4, 4.30 gears, 4500 stall. the motor is a new build, 427 sbf, 4.0x4.125, 240 tea high ports, 12.5-1 cr,
solid roller cam. Victor intake. Just looking to run 10.00 in our crappy (4-5000 da) air. Thanks Mark. I was hoping you would chime in.

A good Dominator will do it, depending on the cam specs I might like to see more stall. At the carb challenge the pulls started at 4200, my 1050 ran about the same up to 4800 and took off from there. So it can be done, just not with an off the shelf or cheap builders carb. BLP, AED would be a good start.

OK thanks. It sounds like a 1000 cfm 4150 style carb might be my best choice?

An 850, 1000HP, or 1050 4150 style Quick Fuel will be fine, just depends on how much adjustability and bling you want as for prices.

Thanks, I don't care about the bling but adjustability is always good. Just curious,
if the holley 950hp has a venturi of 1.375 and my old 750 mighty demon had a venturi of 1.4xx. Does that mean the demon 750 would support more airflow/power?
Or is there other considerations that would limit the 750 demon over the 950 holley?
