Goodfellow AFB.

Goodfellow Air Force Base is a non-flying United States Air Force base located in San Angelo, Texas. As part of Air Education & Training Command (AETC), Goodfellow's main mission is cryptologic and intelligence training for the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Military firefighters are also trained here as part of the 312th Training Squadron. It is the home of the 17th Training Wing (17 TW). The base is named for World War I aviator First Lieutenant John J. Goodfellow, Jr.

I used to fly into Laredo and had to call San Angelo radio for the ATIS years ago, there was some HUGE test track in the area where there were always cars going around it for what I understood was durability testing, might be somthing to go to see on the weekends when he has a day off.

Lots of Latinas and Mexican food there also for diversions. Dave

Intel

Infantry can try for a STA platoon. He's not infantry.

STA = surveillance and target acquisition platoon aka scout snipers

That would be the Bridgestone/Firestone proving grounds in Fort Stockton. All kinds of set ups for tire testing. Wild one is the nearly 8 MILE oval track.

OP. I stayed in a hotel at Goodfellow late last year when my Mom was in the hospital there. Dont know the details but it was very interesting to check out the displays of different Predator type models. Also, they have a cool little garage for the soldiers use. Had several lifts and a chassis dyno. There were a couple of first gen Camaros, mudder jeeps, etc. He may wanna check that out too.

Uniroyal test track in Laredo. Been there a few times. They have a skid pad that's perfectly flat. Will hold a 1/4 inch of water. That's where they do tire testing. Also Ford does a fair amount of testing there.

Sounds like I missed it by a couple of hundred miles. I had wondered if there was another on that far South.

The test track you seen was the Goodyear test track. Back in the late 60s and early 70s you should have seen the shit that they would build. They had a original 68 Hemi Road Runner and one of Bobby Allison NASCAR's for high speed testing. I have seen them go to the local GM dealer and get a LS-7 and put it in a double cab dually. But that is all gone now, they just use new cars now. Once or twice a year they will rent my buddies IMCA car for skid testing. But San Angelo has good Mexican food, some clubs just a nice little laid back Tx town. We did have a drag strip but it closed two years a go, and we do have a 1000yd shooting range though.
