In an attempt to not start yet another "LS coil" thread I'll bring this back to life as it seems to have the best real data. After reading through this a few times here is what I understand:

The coils in question are as follows (some people have been successful with all of them) :
  • The LS1 coil GM part number 12558948 (AC Delco D577)
  • The LS2 coil (GM# 12573190, AC Delco D514-A) from the 2005-2006 Corvette (& GTO and Avalanche), and
  • The LS2/truck coil used on 2002-2005 Cadillac Escalade, 2000-2006 Yukon, 1999-2006 Chevy Silverado, 2001-2005 Trail Blazer, and some Hummers, etc.. The model is GM# 10457730 or AC Delco D585 (also Wells C1251, Standard UF262, GM/Daewoo 19000521. It has a visible external aluminum heat sink near the connector.
Things that will cause issues with any of the above coils:
  • The first issue seems to be too much dwell time causing coils to "auto" fire. (From what I have read the LS2 coils do not gain anything above a 5ms dwell but have not confirmed it)
  • There are potential issues if the coil ground is not isolated properly (using a common ground)
-

Does that pretty much sum it up? If it does can we make it a sticky here or in the ignition section?

The square coil Kurt is talking about is pn 12558693 and was available on trucks (e.g. my 2003 Silverado SS)

In what year did the coils change? I have a '06 5.3(L33) with the heat sinks and an '01 5.3(LM7) without the them. Haven't run into problems with either of them, but then again I'm not running some crazy ass combos like the rest of the guys on here.

I've got is solved......I pulled a full set of the 12558693 coils with brackets and harnesses from a running 68,000 mile truck for $65.

I've used every set of LS coils discussed here and can confirm, there's no magical dwell problems. I've had "certain unnamed popular EFI controllers" running on my EMS test bench and you would be surprised what kind of scary ignition timing issues can happen under a variety of load & RPM conditions. Many EFI systems out there have not been totally debugged before they went on sale. You want to stick with a distributor if you're running one of the popular domestic systems IMO. You can purchase a MS engine simulator that will run any EFI controller on the bench, then use a simple/cheap oscilloscope to watch the coil outputs in realtime. There's a reason I stick with systems whose firmware code I can see and help debug if I find a problem.

Another reason I'm still using my stock coils.

Those are the ones that I have with my carb/msd6010. 15.5:1 compression. It fires up with 15degrees and goes to 30 at 2500 and stays locked at 30. i have had zero timing issues all the way up to 8500.

If you guys can hold off another 120 days, we will have our Gen 4 Firecore LScoils available. Standard LS coils have 72 mj, the truck LS coils have 95 to 100, our latest Gen4 FireCore Coilpacks will have 125 mj. They will be available thru Modern Day Racecraft in or around March. These are a direct bolt on. LMR dyno-tested our hand-built prototypes, and they performed as suspected on their 1250 RWHP dyno. These are being built now, and will be ready for distribution around March. Thanks

They've gotta be better than the $700 MSD coils that weren't better than the stockers LOL

Interesting vid.

We helped out on project that used Mega Squirt to run the Yukon coils (D585). Boost, Nitrous, and near 10,000 rpm on twin cylinder bike. Worked great.

The Gen 3's we have now are around 65 a piece. I can't imagine the Gen 4's being too much more.

This is for Rick G. (Firecore50).

I am the one who made the circuit board for your coils.
I fitted a 36-65 AMP (125C-25C) IGBT
I REMOVED the "dwell staler" circuit ( NO SELF FIRING)
First test was done over ONE year ago.
What we found :
1. Coil charge time was reduced by 1 ms.
2. Coils work fine at stock pressure levels.
3. Coils would arc (Internally) when CO-2 Pressure was OVER 400 PSI.
4. Changes were made to INCREASE performance.

These coils (next design) should be finished very soon, as you stated.

Hi Lance, great to see you on here. Please explain to us about the permanent magnets used in the "Hot" coils, and what make these things The hottest on the market right now. Thank you.
