I have never run R&R but I have heard from a guy who builds a lot of mopar engines that they hold up as well as most.

Interesting read..

I was recently speaking with an engine builder about a possible new combo, and as soon as I said a 400 shot or better he said no way to alum rods, billet steel was his answer...
Maybe I shouldn't have them build me anything....

Ok, to add to my question. I talked to GRP today about my rods and the possibility of having them bushed. They told me yes that they could bush these rods and they probably would be fine for a little while longer. The rods that they had told me that had more clearance than the others were number 1 and 7 and I did have wristpins that just started to ebnd on these rods. They told me that the pins bending were more than likely the cause of the excess clearance. So the question I am asking myself is, knowing the life of these rods and knowing what caused the excess clearance would you guys have the rods bushed and get some more life out of them or call it quits on these and get a new set. If I do bush them I will be pulling the motor apart in the off season anyways and at least checking them, if they need replacing I would do it at that time.

30,000 dollar motor......1,000 dollar set of rods. Seems an easy call to me.

You got a small block Ford? go to bennetracing.com what could be easier, seriously though they are nice to deal with and build top notch stuff.

I guess my response is if you look at any of the big time nitrous engine builders products, what are they running? If steel were better, more reliable, or whatever, then they would be using them wouldn't they? We race with quite a few nitrous ProMod/ProStreet teams and I know of none using steel rods...just sayin

Mike,

I agree, for big inch race stuff you gotta run aluminum whether you are spraying or not. But on smaller strokes, or less than MAXIMUM amounts of nitrous, steel rods are an acceptable choice. Your typical 300-600 hp tune on a BBC does not need aluminum rods. Start getting much more aggressive than that and it becomes a good idea.

GRP has ALWAYS been in my junk..

Thousands of street miles, hundreds of passes, and never one single failure of any type. I have changed out about three sets in 5 years, but even when I checked the old ones, they were still right on size, within a couple tenths..

I have not seen an aluminum rod come out of an engine that gets abused as much as mine and consistently look so good.
