Old bay isn't spicy enough and steaming doesn't get enough of the flavor in it for me. I do use old bay for a sprinkle-on seasoning on potatoes and corn though. Zatarains crab and shrimp boil FTW (orange looking powder in a plastic bag).

As far as crabs go, the only kind to eat is crab legs, snow or king boiled not steamed. Screw those things where you steam or boil the whole crab.

Zatarains mix has all of the spices and flavor in it already. You can always add cayenne pepper, etc... to taste.
Fill the pot with water, bring to boil, put in the Zatarains, extra spices, lemons, etc... bring back to boil. Drop in the crabs. Boil for 5 or so minutes. Shut them off and let them soak for about 20 minutes. I usually let them soak till they start sinking in the pot. Gotta let them soak up the flavor. |
