Default BBC rods: eagle vs. 7/16 dimple

This came up in a conversation the other day.

Which is better quality and strength for BBC: GM 7/16 dimple (LS-7 rod) or eagle h-beam or I for that matter.

The reason it came up is we never heard of a dimple rod breaking but have seen quite a few eagle rods break. Not talking a crazy max HP deal just general bracket motor 700-800 hp.

When I bought my Eagle H beam rods, I believed they were equal in strength and ability. If you hang a decent lightweight piston on them either will live quite well. It just seemed by the time you took 8 GM rods, resized them, repalced rod bolts, magnafluxed them, bushed them for floating pins, you could just as easily buy the Eagles for the same price and they were balanced closer together.

I ran the GM rods forever in lots of motors. Now I use Eagles H beam or another brand H beam rod because the GM rods are old and used up in my opinion.

Try spraying the 7/16s dimples with nitrous and find out the GM rod will die a slow death with a poweradder.

I've ran the Eagles H beams with L-19's and had great luck with them, in 1000hp and 250 shot of hose on it

I wouldnt take the gm rod no where near that with the house

My friend bent a dimple rod the first time he hit the bottle (250 shot). I'd go with the Eagle H-Beams.

Well guys I have 1 for you. I have a 509 with 7/16 dimple rods with good bolts. I've been 8.82 @154 in a 3390 lb car. With a 225 hit of nitrous.
I never knew the rods were in the motor until I took it apart. I had the rods magged and they were mint.
I bought the engine this way...I didin't purposely put them in there.

Most definitely go for the aftermarket rods...just was ironic that the issue came up .

I wasnt going to say anything but...
Im supprised of the negative comments about the GM rods. Those GM rods will take a pounding and Ive never personaly seen one break. I have heard of them breaking
but not often, come to think of it Ive heard of Hbeams breaking
I know of many engines making four figures on the hose and one on a procharger.
Is it worth spending a couple hundred to fix the rods, probably not.
Oh dont forget that the dimples were 4340 too.

I ran L-88 bushed dimples for years in my first blower motors. Granted, they only made about 900 HP, but never had any issues at all that weren't my fault in the tune up.

these were the cats ass "back in the day",but with all the aftermarket rods that are avaliable why woul any body use them unless they had them and were bucks down to buy a aftermarket set, besides they only come in one lenght.now, as far as being strong, thay can take some abuse, but like anything,it has its limits, just my 02.
