I know how to count. I ll get in, usually I'll be in first though, but at the 10k race @ norwalk there were a few that as soon as they put both bulbs on they were on the converter/chip... . a couple of them were double bulbed too.

i have to say i have done it by accident. if i have time i will back out of the beams. but i have had street cars run right to the line and light both bulbs. so then i just do my deal and take my time bumping in.

Wow lots of good information here about staging.

I have raced for a good 16 years on and off the track, but never anything formal until last year which was my first season running a series for points. So I was basically a rookie to class racing, After being down for 8 years it took a few test sessions to become comfortable with the car, but I settled in on my driving style which I used all season with no complaints from drivers or starters. I would normally just roll in double bulb, get off the brakes and set my transbrake and focus. My theory of this was I can get in, stage, get on the button, and when I saw the other guy stage all I had to do was stab it and leave on his ass, and I'd say about 90% of the time in eliminations I would leave on my competetion, and go my first career round win with a holeshot. Anyways, back to staging, for me rollin in to double bulb and sit idling on the button waiting allows me to gather myself and focus.

So what is the Correct way to stage in drag racing? I read all these posts and nobody has given the definitive answer as to what is correct. Or does it depend on the track starter, and your competetion whether he complains or not that you rolled in to stage before he broke the beams at all?

One driver prestages.
Second driver prestages.
EITHER drive stages.
Second driver stages.

You should also be sure whether the track is using autostart or not. I've seen starters redlight drivers for not staging quickly enough, while the other car was on the converter. We replayed the video on one of them, and it was only 3-4 seconds. The other cars were always turbo cars.

It SHOULD be common courtesy, Especially at the track. Its nice to give eachother time to get ready. What pisses me off is when people stage and are on the 2-step and the other homo takes their time rolling in. I have seen that happen to Scarry twice in Orlando. I know he was pissed.

I know bracket racing is 90% mental so guys use whatever tactic they can to try and screw up the other's guys/gals concentration. I guess i'm aware of what the other driver is doing so i can courtesy stage, but even if they double bulb me, I could care less, my staging routine is set off the thousands of passes logged so i know it takes far under the autostart timer to get into the beams, then lock and load...so no sweat off my nutz, but many guys do this to try and screw up the other guy...new guys get rattled pretty bad since they feel rushed, veterans could give two shits what the other guy does.

As for the idiots that, and yes i mean that, for the guys racing sportsman trees (not pro trees) i say if we're lined up, go ahead...get on your 2 step as quickly as possible, get that tranny hot, burn that convertor up, it's your money and your dial your risking screwing up because you dont know exactly when the tree will finally activate...and then i love it when these fools are pop'n and bang'n and then the starter waves his arms to back out and pull back in and reset the process all over again LMFAO!!!! priceless.

To Jalil Jabber:
the staging routine was explained above but one thing forgotten if your brackets:
before even thinking about pulling into the beams you look at the board and make damn sure your dial is correct, if so, THEN start bumping in. Staging is almost as hard as finish line driving, if not more complicated since that is the one spot where if your 1/2"-1" different than the round before that is all it takes to red eye/be late and effect ET.

Thanks for the info... I run Pro Tree Heads up and don't get on the converter until my opponent is fully staged. I don't know how the autostart works, but I'm guessing once one guy is fully staged, if the other guy is only prestaged he has a set amount of time to fully stage. But if I roll in double bulb, and he sits there without even pre stage lit, what happens? will the starter back me out, will they wave him in..

It's up to the starter's discretion. Most everywhere I have been to, in testing, they don't enforce courtesty staging, but in qualifying and eliminations, they do enforce it.

You are correct...autostart begins when three bulbs are lit. If you double bulb and the other driver does not prestage, my experience is that the starter will back up the double bulber completely out of the lights if courtesy staging is being observed at that track. Otherwise, he can sit there and let the double bulber (i.e. you) sit with both lights on until the starter takes some sort of definitive action.

I have been double bulbed, and I have double bulbed somebody.

When I am bracket racing and I get double bulbed, I take a few extra seconds before I start staging my car, in an attempt to get into their head a little bit. When footbraking, I stage by bringing the car into the top bulb, then bringing the rpm up to where I want to launch the car, then bump into the second bulb. This has been the most consistent and it gives you the longest head start on getting out of the beams since this puts you in really shallow.

Now, when I am running a grudge race, I do my burnout, then roll up and turn both bulbs on. Most of my grudge races are in somebody else's car with alot more of their money on the line so I do whatever it takes to give me the best chance of winning for them. Here is an example:

Why did'nt he let you burn? was he that goofy not to know that or car could'nt stand sitting there for a few mintues before entering his lights?

If you listen, I am sitting there idling, I could have waited until I ran out of gas and still been fine. That car stays nice and cool sitting at idle Not my problem that he thought he needed an across the starting line burnout.

I have done it by accident, Usually I will back out to the pre-stage. One memorable time was in eliminations at a track that has an extremely strict no reverse policy for street cars, I double bulbed by accident and waited what seemed like 3 minutes for the guy to come in... I knew if I turned on the reverse lamps I was going home and I think he knew that too... So I waited got an .009 light and handed him his ass.

I went to appologise for the double bulb and the guy was a major prick about it I felt bad but it was an honest mistake.
