Didn't a older man put the oil on the street? I would cruise the blvd. In a white gta trans am and a red convertable mustang. One night we got chased (with the top down and 5 of us were in the car) from the blvd east on the grand central and we got away! That was one of the crazy nights.

Had a friend take out his brother's Buick Stage I out for streetrace once after school---ate a '71 Z/28 alive! Once you got past the H.S it really was pretty good as there were no cross-streets but compared to some places it WAS a little rough (I'm talking '71-'73 here)

That was the thing---lots of places had streetracing & they were good, I'm sure, but no place had more locations than NYC. Somehow guys just didn't care they "type" of road or where--they just wanted to do it. Of course back then the cars weren't as quick or fast so it definitely was different. Nowadays I think maybe half the places we used MAY be minimally acceptable---except the cars & penalties are faaaaaaaaaaaar more exensive...

Here's the story on the street oil down incident,

Crash Kills Man, and Another Is Accused of Oiling the Road
By ESTHER IVEREM
Published: November 05, 1987

A 20-year-old Queens man was killed Tuesday night when his car hit a slick of oil, spun out of control and struck a tree in Flushing. Hours later, a 58-year-old man who lives nearby was charged with second-degree manslaughter, and the police said he poured the oil onto the street minutes before the accident.

The police said yesterday that they believed the arrested man, Andrew Romano, of 166-32 25th Avenue, whose backyard adjoins the street, spread the oil to discourage drag racers who have turned a two-mile strip in a quiet community into a deafening and sometimes dangerous place at night.

According to the police, the driver of the car, Kevin Miret, 20 years old, of 25-40 82d Street in Jackson Heights, was racing with another car northbound on Francis Lewis Boulevard between 26th and 24th Avenues when his car, a 1987 Ford Mustang convertible, hit the slick.

While rounding a curve about 400 feet from 26th Avenue, Mr. Miret's car hit the oil and spun out of control for 200 feet and struck the tree. Witnesses told the police that just before the accident, they saw Mr. Romano pour oil from a pan onto the street, according to Capt. Robert Giannelli, a Queens detective assigned to the case.

Lots of Memories from Franny Lew ! Big BRAWL one night too. The oil incident was was tragic for many. South Conduit, Fountain Ave, Nathans Oceanside, Deer Park, Hutch Pway & 1/9 in Jersey were all happening spots. Those days were something and getting home when the sun was coming up was very common.

I remember when that happened. NYC back in the day had a big racing scene. I like the racing more on fountain ave and out east on the island

It's too bad Nathan's is now dead as far as the car scene goes.

Many a youthful night spent on Franny Lew
