Glide lurches car going into gear

Just installed a race glide into a vintage race car and shifting into reverse or low from park or neutral it lurches the car and hits the tires so hard it will even try to kill engine.

BBC (flat tappet 600 hp) with 8" 5000 stall convertor idling at 1200-1300 rpm when shifting into gear. Adjusted idle to rich and lean and it still hits the gear pretty hard when shifting from park or neutral. It is a old style trans brake w/o safety reverse lock out. Driving slowly and letting off throttle requires you to feather throttle as well. Stalls on brake ok.

Other race cars I race do not slam into gear like this one.

Could it be a bad convertor, clutches, band adjustment or do some valve bodies do this or normal?
