View Full Version : Cam Difference for SB2.2 vs 15* SBC

This is a general question about what is being used with most success in SB2.2 sbc comp elim type engines.

Comparing a typical high RPM SBC Comp Elim type engine with 15* heads and a SB2.2 engine of the same displacement, what is the difference in durations or lobe/cam designs for the different type of heads.

The SB2.2 has much better flow in the mid lift and also the fuel/air discharges into the chamber in a different direction so I expect quite a bit of difference in intake duration, and possibly LSA and exhaust duration. I was told by a well known Comp racer who runs SB2.2 stuff that the cam isn't much different and intake duration in the low 280's @ .050" is what they run (is this bs?). I also heard that WC engines have in the 260's @ .050", (more bs?). The Comp engine was 2x4carbs, but I wanted to know in both cases, 1x4 and 2x4, how the ideal cam compares with the two different type of heads.

I always believed that a better flowing head will run better with shorter duration. 282* @ .050" sounded like too much for that type head. Am I out in left field?

I do not like big duration camshafts. I see no reason for a SBC with SB2 heads to warrant duration in the 280's at .050. The Cup cams that I have had my hands on are all different based on the track. I have seen some open plenum manifold/super speedway stuff in the 267-269 range. Depending upon the rocker ratio and the .200 number, I could see that.

Most people over cam an engine. In terms of duration.
