I am in the market for two new lenses and have been looking the Canon "L" lenses but how would you compare them to the performance of a comperable Sigma lens. Is there a great deal of difference or is it mostly price. Thanks Matt
Which lenses, specifically?

The Canon 70-200 F4 L piece blows away my Sigma 70-200 F2.8 by FAR.

L glass is expensive for a reason. If forced to choose between my first-gen D-Rebel with my 70-200L, or my 30D with a Canon 70-300 USM III, I'd go with the old body and good lens every time. One thing I will say, though, is that for motorsports photography, I don't think paying the premium for image stabilization is worth it, since there are rarely occasions where it makes sense for me to slow down the shutter to take advantage of it.

Dont buy sigma, spend the extra money and buy a Canon lens for your Canon Camera, no off brand.
I have to sigmas 24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8, I have found that the photos look good and come out good, but when I would blow them up past and 8x10 print they were all soft!
you will never get the sharpness with an off brand lens as you would buying same brand lenses ie, Canon and Canon, Nikon with Nikon, Yes Sigma and other brands are cheaper, but just like building a race car, you get what you pay for.

Thanks everyone, Looks like it will be L glass for sure. I may also go with a IS model because I do shoot some weddings on occasion.

L glass all the way.
Ive never had any sigma lens, but I do have a 70-200 f-4 L, and a Tamron 28-75 2.8.
The Tamron is pretty damn good for what it is, but that Cannon L is the shit.

Thanks Lonnie, This question was asked before and I was crucified for saying buy good glass, of course I said sigma was junk LOL but compared to the canon and nikon stuff it is. You get what you pay for, it may work fine for awhile but when it goes bad it will cost as much to fix as a good lense would have to begin with. someone else mentioned you dont need image stabilization and I belive it, I dont have it on any of mine and I dont need it. It will save you 300-500 if you buy it without it.

But they are well worth the money and damn near half of the others.

there is no such thing as Image stabilization in drag racing photography!!!!! lol
Now if I was buying a mammoth of a lens to do some really long distance shooting yes, but on a 70-200 you really dont need it, Ive tryed shooting with it but it messes with my eyes.
My next purchase will be a Canon 70-200 F2.8 some day when I can afford it, till then I will just stick to using my bosses stuff lol

One of the best lenses I have ever used was Sigma's 50-500. I say "best" because of it virsatillaty and zoom range. I have used this lense almost exclusivley for more than a few years (and i have a lot of lenses) But, for KILLER sharpness and speed, you can't beat Canon glass.
Remember one thing when looking for lenses. The camera takes the picture, your image goes through the glass (lense) . The better the glass, the better the image.
