I have a 1962 Nova with the orginal 4 lug rear end......I am going to change the rear end over to a 5 lug. I am thinking of a 8.8 with disc.
Does anyone know the hub to hub width of a 8.8 out of a mustang?
What other rear end would be a easy swap besides a orginal 8.2 10 bolt?

I will have to weld brackets anyway because I am getting rid of the leaf springs.

This is going to be very mild driver. It will have Heidts super ride front clip and a Heidts or TCI rear 4 bar coilover set up for the rear.

Eddie depends on the years, the fox body is the shorter of the three.
94 -98 1.5 longer, and 99-04 cars are longer yet.
Whats the length your trying to achieve ?

I put a 98 explorer 8.8 in my '65 mustang for a whopping $230.

59 3/4" wide, 31 spline axles, disc brakes and 3.73 posi diff. It was also available in 3.55 and 4.10.

I am thinking a factory Chevy II hub to hub width is 57 3/4........
An inch or 2 narrower I think would work with the correct backspaced wheel.........
What year did the 8.8 come with 5 lugs?

I think all explorers came 5 lug. The v8 late 90's trucks i think are all 31 spline posi. Not entirely sure. The diff is offset to the pass. side to accomodate the transfer case but the offset is about the same as the height diff. between the tranny and rear in alot of cars anyway so its pretty much the same operating angle. As long as the pinion and tranny are parrallel under power your good to roll.

The mustang started coming with 5 lug axles in 94.

I believe they are 1" wider for the 1994 and newer Mustangs as well.

Yeah the 94-98 were like and inch wider then a fox body the 99 and up are even wider yet. If you get the truck rear end it will have 31 spline and a 7/8 cross pin. The mustangs were all 28 spline and had a 3/4 cross pin.

One thing you could do is get an 8.8 narrow it and then put 9 inch ends on it. Then it gets rid of the c clips. I have not been able to find anyone that makes a c clip eliminator kit for disk brakes. Another thing that is good to do is have the axle tubes welded to the center section they have been known to spin.

run the 8.2 10 bolt. i ran 6.50s in the 1/8 on a stock 10 bolt with a posi. dont waste the time on changing it over they are plenty strong for a street car.
