View Full Version : How much is too much or too little...

Hi Pete and Brian, I was wondering what is the proper amount of oil to feed to the turbo? I heard someone overfed the turbo this weekend which caused some problems. I know too little is also a problem. So what is the correct amount? I will be switching to a -4 feed line past the filter and running an additional filter inline dedicated to the turbo. My turbo is mounted past the centerline of the motor and the drain is a -12 (45* off the turbo) with a line around 12" long with a -12 (straight fitting) into the pan. Im sure there is a balance between the drain and the inlet. But what is that balance? How or can it be measured? Is too much really a problem if it isn't pushing past the seals? Is it worth while to run an oil cooler for the turbo? or is that overkill?

No expert but i'm sure you wont want any bigger than -4, that will supply plenty of oil. Also the return cant really be too big so -12 would be plenty. I assume your return is just gravity working and not a pump into the pan.

Thanks 95.. It is only a drain with no suction pump to it...

I agree with 95, you can't really have too much large dia. drain line. The -4 is also correct.

Monty a #4 is perfect for a feed and would go no smaller then a #10 on the drain I use a #12. I think alot of folks get to blowing seals out when they don't have propper size drain. Or when the drain actually goes back up hill before it goes into the pan this is a no no! I usually get a feed for my turbo after the oil filter. Hope this helps. Mudduck

Thanks Duck, I do have a good drain (-12).. Its the pressure side past the filter I need to up grade to a number 4. I am going to install the proper filter (Im using a system 1) for that supply line as well. I like my system one filter for the motor.. But my turbo might not be as happy with one..

Thanks Harry Hruska for all the help today.. I know enough to be dangerous now.. :-D Seriously thanks a ton.. Your customer service, tech support and products are second to none!!
