Ratio 3.31 has 43 teeth on ring and 13 on pinion, 3.27 has 36 teeth on ring and 11 on pinion. If you set them both side by side you will notice the 3.31 has smaller teeth on the ring and pinion. Does that effect strength? Probably not since you are looking for tooth contact, the more contact the more torque it will handle and or how much load you can spread out along the tooth. I'm sure Ford designed these to replace the 3.27 in their trucks for more torque load.
Sorry to ramble, I really don't have an answer. I guess it all depends on how the gear is set up and or if anything loosens over time. Gears are mechanical and 95% of the time it is not the gears fault for a failure.
