How old do you think a fish like that is? 100 or so?

I like to reffer to these behemoths as fresh water tarpon, my largest was 10' 6" at appox 600 lbs. 3 hours to get it to the beach to release it. This fish was just over or just under 100 years old. I you tell when you see a 10 foot plus fish come right out of the water it's amazing. Sometimes they will sulk on the bottom and sometimes you can't keep them in the water. We use 1 pc. 8 foot rods with Shimano TLD 20 reels spooled with 100 pound braided line. The biggest fish on record for B.C. was 18 feet long and around 1200 lbs. Here's a picture of a 10 foot plus fish that was hooked and released back in July of this year.

You can tell this a big fish by the size of it head in relationship to the 4 guys trying to lift it.

Nice fish!

A couple guys a few years back hooked into a 12.5' On the Columbia river here in the Pac northwest. They were in a boat and were fishing just behind the Bonneville Dam. They were able to estimate it's size after it leaped a few times and they got off a couple pictures in midair. They gave the pics to a dept of fish and wildlife officer and he ran a estimation program on it's size.
It leaped once and snapped it's head to the side, breaking the pole and snapping the braided cable line like nothing.

The Kootenia river in northern Idaho has some big ones in it too.

Smoked sturgeon is delicious.:-D

Yes bottom feeders, anything on the bottom will be sucked up by these fish. We use bait fish like eulachon and smelt. Dew worms, ditch eels and roe and rotting salmom carcases. In the spring run-off we can use up to 22 oz. of lead to hold the bait on the bottom....

Roll mop herring works good to, this stuff in this jar (3/4 page down)
http://dgbait.net/saltwater-bait.html#rmh

A strip of it wrapped around the hook, then sewing string to hold the bait to the hook. (you dont have to load the hook with it)

Sturgeon are the garbage trucks of the water, they'll suck up just about anything.

We used big pyramid weights with nails drove thru them to hold the bottom, strong current in the Columbia during high water.

I found that is one of the finest fresh water fish I have ever had. Ours came from lake of the woods, minnestoa side, about 50#, smoked and deep fried it was over the top. Most are released we keep one pre season.
