i haven't had a deer since 1999, & opening day i broke that curse with a nice big-bodied 6 point. it coulda been an 8 pont, but he has no brow tines. my brother-in-law is gonna mount it for me.
it was 8:00 am opening day, & i was getting tired of sitting. so i stood up(slowly) to stretch my legs, & this guy appeared from behind a thicket dead ahead of me. he wasn't paying any attention to me at all, so i put my scope on him & waited for a clean shot. he was only aboit 70 yards away, & when i realized he was about to disappear into a thick stand of sapling oaks, it was now or never. i aimed for his vitals & dropped the hammer. one of the saplings came apart as the buck dropped out of sight. i knew i'd hit him, but i could hear him thrashing around in the leaf litter. racking in another round in my 30-06 remington, i stepped out of my natural blind & walked cautiously to where he'd last stood. i noticed immediately his spine was severed(see pic), a huge exit wound gaping & bleeding. he was trying desperately to get up, so i knew i had to end him quickly. another hit to the chest silenced his agony. it was only then i took a breath & counted points. not a monster, but he's the biggest buck i've ever taken...so far.
