Mr Jay I was reading the other thread about the LS-series lifter problems and it sounds similar to mine. The problem child is a friends Buick GN. It has a Comp single pattern cam with 212 @ .050 and 512 lift also has Comp 853-12 hyd rollers. The oiling system is stock other than some minor be-burring. The problem is very noisy lifters. This is our second set thanks to a warranty job. I set the lifters to .025 preload with a dial caliper on a magnetic stand. Haven't cranked-em down yet, to see if it helps. Do you think the Morrel lifters would help my situation? Any kind thoughts would be much appreciated.

Those V-6 Buicks are horrible when it comes to oiling. I have had no luck getting hyd lifters to keep quiet in those things. Ever think about taking them apart and shimming the lifter?

Didn't think of that, never had hyd. lifter problems before. I'll give it a shot, how much would you shim them? .060 or is that too much? Thanks for the reply aswell

On the hyd roller stuff, I shim the lifter so it has .025" of movement. From no load until full compression. Then I preload the lifter about .010". Figure .006" for heat (like lash if you will) and you are at .016" (+/-) leaving only .009" (again +/-) for hyd action. That may do the trick.
Now if it eats itself alive (because of the oiling issues) I really don't want ya pissed off at me.......

Thanks Jay, I'll give it a try and we won't worry too much if it blows up I want him to buck up for a nice short block any-way. Besides it would be one hell of a road trip, and I'd forgive ya before I got half way anyhow!

Jay, what do you use to shim the lifters? Do you have a dummies guide to doing this? My 98 model OE Hyd roller sbc has a light tap and I have thought about stretching the spring to see if that would help out but I am sure that is not the best way. The no load you talk about is that resting against the snap ring? I have it down right now so we were going to try something. Thanks Jason
I was going to quote this part but I don't see where I can so this is from above.

If it eats itself, you are on your own.......
The .010" is where I'd set it HOT. Thus cold will be about (+/-) .004" preload. Start with .050" of travel and see where it goes.
As far as what shims do I use. I go to a hardware with calipers in hand. Use a washer. Find one that is close to the desired thickness. Then turn the O.D. down to fit.
Good Luck.......
