I have a set of Strange axles that i want to upgrade from 1/2 to 5/8 studs. Is this possible? Can I just drill and tap it for the larger stud size?
These are the studs I'd like to buy.

Don't see why not, I think the tap drill size for 5/8 studs is larger than 1/2". Just make sure when you do that you keep everything straight.

Yeah thats what I figured, I just don't want to do it and make the axle flange weaker.

Not to hijack, but what do you do to the wheels when you have 5/8 studs? Drill the wheels also? Thanks.

I sent mine to strange for redrilling/tapping. Heard nightmares from guys that have tried it. Something about them being hardened. I was too busy to mess with them, plus piece of mind. It was like $75 total, I think.
Most wheels will accomodate the 5/8, because the use the shouldered nuts.

When having the axles drilled for 5/8 studs they do need to be indexed on a mill. Your best bet is to send them back to Strange and have them do it. Hate to see someone waiste a set of axles for no reason.

Yeah I think I will send them back to Strange since I need to have them shortened as well. I was just curious if this was something that wouldn't be an issue doing myself.

I've done drums and rotors on my mill but the axle must be straight as an arrow.
Did a set of Mark Williams , were 5x4.5 went to 5x4.75 the flanges were so tough had to put on my CNC circle interpulate holes with carbide mill & thread mill with carbide. So if you don't have that capabilty I would send them out.

i had my mosers done at moser from 1/2 to 5/8.they just made 2nd set of holes for the 5/8 studs so thers both 1/2 and 5/8.weld pro stars didnt need any work to fit.

Axles arent as hard as people think they are. They have to have flexibilty to them, or them will not handle the shock loads exerted on them. I made a little U shaped aluminum plate on the mill and drill/taped 2 1/2-13 holes in it for mill clamp studs. Clamped the plate to the table, hung the U clamp over the edge of the mill table, took a dial-test indicater and indicated the flange that is machined from moser/strange/MW totally flat. Then indicated each hole individually with the dial test within .001". Lock the table, Drill and tap without moving the table. Repeat 9 more times. Yes, it took me a little while to do all of them, but they are dead nuts!
I used a OSG TiCN coated plug tap and a Precision Twist Drill Cobalt gold stub drill. The correct drill size is 37/64"

Were those the MW 300M axles?

Strange said they can do both.
Here is a picture of the email I received.

If you look at the email from Strange, it says they can shorten the axle depending on how much spline is on it. That means they are not going to respline it. If you only need an inch or so cut off, they can probably do that because there will be plenty of spline left. If you are needing an axle 3 inches shorter, you are gonna have to buy a new axle.

I believe that to be true I shorthened my Tubes 2 Inches and had the axles cut with a ChopSaw. Only 1 inch of the Spline on the Shaft actually Contacts inside the Spool. And my 4 Lug Home Cut Axles are holding up Pretty Good So Far "see Pic Below"

A new set of the proper axles (5/8" studs, the proper length, etc)are not much over $200. Sell what you have and get new ones.

They are new and have zero runs on them. I will use them since it is cheaper to have them do the re drill it.

I just got off the phone with Dutchman Motorsports they will shorten and respline a pair of axles for $90. www.dutchmanms.com

^^^So you spend $90 on getting what you have modified to work. Then probably spend another $20 on shipping each way. So you're at $130. Sell the axles you have and buy the proper ones for around $250-$275. If the axles you have are at worst a "decent" aftermarket axle i'm sure you can get $100 for them. All said and done maybe $50 out of pocket.
Theres a reason most big axle companies wont do a respline. Its your life we're talking about.

There are more emails than just that one, he assumed I didn't have new axles. He said as long as you leave an inch and a half of spline you are ok not needing to re-spline them.

Well the axles that im having cut a resplined are strange 31 spline 4 lug. I guess the reason why strange can't do it is because I need 2.5 inches cut off each axle. If I was to buy new ones it would cost me a couple grand because I would get 33 spline, gun drilled, lightened flanges, new spool, strange pro race brakes, new wheels since it's 5 lug,and a bigger tire so I think this is what I will have to do for now. Thanks!!
