I'm trying to set up a Ford 9" Traction-Loc.

I have new clutches and steels and the '70's manual says to start with a .050
shim and with a special Ford tool (Ford p/n T68P-4946-A) (Locking Differential tool 205-028) check with a feeler gauge and if .001-.002 it's ok and if feeler gauge measures more to remove shims.

No one has a tool available.

Is there a way to check the track-loc w/o the special tool

I build them by hand and add or take away shim until I get the clutch pack preload I'm looking for. Usually 150-200 ft lbs or break away torque is what you are looking to set it to. The only special tools I have is some old axleshaft that I cut and made into tools to set up posi's.

Did you try a Ford dealer? I bought mine from the local dealer, it's been 10-12 years though. Maybe they have dicontinued them? Seems to me I gave near $50 for it then. The .050 amount that is referred to is a "standard", I've never seen one require anywhere near .050 of shim...even when using over the steels. After doing a few, it boiled down to an unnessary step, put in an additional .050 & snug down the pack with a bolt, measure & find you had .040 too much shim in. If you strike out, maybe we can measure & compare the "bowl" across the top or something for a measurement down to the case.
