Converting from an N/A 496 BBC to F2 blow thru. Motor is now going to be a 498" w/ Canfield CNC ported 335 heads, 9 or 9.5:1 comp. My goal is a VERY conservative 1000fwhp with 15 psi or less boost. Should be easy.
The cam I was running N/A is a solid roller cam motion 284/295 @ .050 .800/.765 112lsa on a 110icl. I plan to stay solid roller, question is with my power goal should I just get a 'shelf' cam or have one custom done. I'm thinking it shouldn't make much difference. Was just thinking of something easier on valve springs maybe a 26x/270x @ .050, low .700" lift, 114 lsa, 110icl. I want the power to peak between 6500 and 6800 also. These heads are supposed to flow close to 400cfm @ .800 though.....I don't want to throw tons of power away either.
BTW, Jay I left you a message a few weeks ago, but never heard back. Is email a better way to get ahold of you if I decide on a custom cam? Also, do you have flow sheets for Canfield 335's? John@Canfield seemed to think you did.
Thanks,
Craig

Then you just answered your own question on custom vs shelf. The blow thru stuff is very fickle. My cams make a ton more signal on the carb and I feel as though the blow thru guys still need to work on signal vs fuel metering. Plus you want something that is easy on parts.
On the surface this may sound easy (engine combo and parts choice) but I think its tougher than it looks.

I have evry flow sheet for just about any Canfield head ever made, I think! LOL
E-Mail is better on the Build Sheet stuff. The sheet can be found on my site. It is long. It is indepth. But just do the best you can, you'll be fine.
On me not calling. Hmmm.......That is strange. It does take sometimes a day or two to get back in touch with guys who have not submitted a sheet (I handle all of those first) but I do get back with guys. I am sorry I didn't for whatever reason.
I am here to help.
Thanks.

Thanks for the response Jay.
Thats a good point about getting good carb signal.....it's just not worth saving $100-$150 on a shelf cam I suppose.
I have your form basically all ready to go....I'll get it sent to you in a couple days. Need to get a few things finalized on the motor first.
I take it you've worked with blow thru setups a bunch in the past?

Yes I have. The stories I could tell.
Let me know when you're ready. I look forward to the oppurtunity to helping you out.
Thanks.

I have the same project going on. If you wouldnt mind I have a couple of questions about how yours went vs. what I am doing. What compression did you end up with? I am going for about 8.7:1. What boost level are you running? Fuel type? I am going to be on E-85.
Anything you would have or would not have done?
Thanks,

Exhuast tends to be the trouble here. If you run the amount of overlap you are suggesting I would very much recomend getting some very serious headers and collectors on the car and look at getting a set of headers with tuneable primarys and collectors. I agree carb signal is a PITA but with stuffy exhuast it'll be even worse !

Hey guys, this thread is pretty old so I'll give you an update. Don't know if Jay is still hanging around here anymore or not, but he did a great job on my cam as far as I'm concerned. This thing has really impressed me and far exceeded my expectations so far. Still has more left in it too w/o adding more boost. The carb is working as it should, pulls really good fuel throughout the rpm range. CSU has a lot to do with that though, not just the cam. I've been running a standard 2-1/8" x 3-1/2" header but am going up to a 2-1/4" x 4" tuneable header this winter which should be good for some HP.
I'm pretty happy with my decision to go with Camshaft Innovations. If Jay can't get a cam spec'd out for you, another option is Steve Morris. He does a ton of blow thru engines and you can get a great cam and tech help from him.
