How much effort should it take to turn the pinion on a correctly set up Mark Williams through-bolt center section w/ new bearings and gear?

Mark Willialms presets their pinion supports with solid spacers to their specifications. They state they would rather burn up a bearing then have a gear failure. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll lolly pop?

Bill, a brand new center feels pretty tight. Your pinion bearings alone should have about 25in-lb preload and the carrier is probably close to the same, plus friction between the gear set. So total your probably looking at close to 60-70 in-lb. That'll feel pretty tight if you're just rotating the yoke by hand. You could measure it and see how far off you are from that.

i dunno about the standard stuff, but our dewco 3rd members for my A/ED are 7-9 in lbs. then again, a dewco 3rd member is about 3 times what a standard center costs.

CraigThat's the problem I couldn't rotate it by hand. The guy that set it up told me to use a breaker bar?

thats too tight.
Mine in the camaro was like 12 in lbs with a big pinion gear set.

Bill, that sounds like it's way jacked, you should be able to turn the pinion yoke by hand.

Eeeek. The bearings aren't going to loosen up THAT much after its broken in. I'd pull the pinion support out and see if thats the culprit or the spool bearings being too tight.

20-25 inch pounds of rotational force is required with new bearings
no more.

I can turn my flange with one finger, with the center section in the car. That's with wheels bolted up and all. Dewco is def. the place to go!!

i would certainly think so. donnie winget (dewco) is the number one guy for the pro stock teams. granted they are lighter and have a lil less hp, donnie is a very smart eccentric sob. he would be a guy i would talk to. be prepared to spend $3500 - $5000.

I have a dewco center section with a 5.11 gear & MW alumn spool for sale.
Came with our car & not needed for our application if anyone is looking for that ratio.
